Anyone got a gopro, seeing loads of cyclists with them now and I feel like I should get one and try something different. What do people actually film whilst cycling?

From people I know who have them you have to do a fair bit of editing to get something watchable - You can add your speed/elevation stats etc to footage and then some music etc on top - I've seen it work well when someone is doing a scenic route or iconic climb/descent. It also worked well when a few friends went Mountain biking up Cannock Chase the other week especially when one 'vanished' into a large puddle right infront of the camera You can also take photo stills off them - not as high quality as a standalone camera but you don't often get the chance to take photo's on the move. Other people I know record their commutes as they reckon that once the drivers clocked they are being filmed they give them a wider berth and drive more defensively - No proof that's the case just what I have been told.

Like damo6 said, there's a lot of editing involved and big files. I use a SJ4000 and it records in 4gb blocks of which is about 35 mins. So far i've been recording my commute everyday and any rides i do, i have been deleting the commute files but keeping the ride videos. On a good day you get some cracking footage but you don't want to sit there and watch a 3+ hour ride back. So to answer your question i film everything when on the bike but don't actually do anything with it.

I have a Virb Elite, only had it for a week or so. Plan to use it every time I go out. I seem to find a lot of idiots when I'm out on my bike so I basically use it to film them, and then name & shame them on YouTube. I've also had a few run ins with drivers in the past that could have resulted in police action had there been evidence, so I have it for that too.
I've found a fair few idiots since getting the camera, but the number of patient/good drivers also seems to have increased slightly. I don't know if that's due to the camera or not (it's hard to miss on my helmet!) but it could be.
I do also plan to upload just random footage of my routes. Nice scenery, or tackling a Strava segment etc. There are a few nice routes around here that I could put up.
The Virb Edit software is so easy to use that it doesn't take long to put something half-decent together (link to my YT channel in my sig.) Like I said I've only it about a week so that is as basic as it gets as far as editing goes. I do plan to add and intro clip, and possibly put my name/channel name in the corner, but neither will take much more work. If you did want to do something like that, then it's not hard to remember roughly where it happened on the ride. Then it's just a case of finding it in the footage. You don't need to watch the whole ride back. You obviously don't need to edit things and put clips together to put on YouTube. If you just want it for security so to speak, then you could just erase the footage each day assuming nothing happened.

I got an SJ4000 for Christmas from my parents (they had planned to get it for me ever since I was knocked off at Easter by the hit and run - this is when you need it IMO - evidence and identification), not a big editor, but I have filmed every ride I've done since and likely will continue to. As an example I made this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kRoRGngPCMgot a new mount now that should be a bit more stable - trying to find a good spot to not annoy me by sticking up loads, but still have a view not all cables.

Another thing with the Virb, while you can easily pull stills from the video when editing it, you can also press one of the buttons on the side when you are out to take a 16mp photo (actually it has a lot of different options for photos, including time lapse). It doesn't matter if you are recording, it won't affect it. It's still not as good as taking your digital camera with you, but it's not bad: Very quick and easy to do

I'm another SJ4000 user. Great" GoPro" for the money. Record clips on club rides whenever I can. I think drivers do take more care when they see it. Highly recommend.

Yeah, 16 will do I'm in the new HDD boat myself. Been out for 4 rides (plus a few drives) and it's already taken up 90GB I need to delete some of the files but I can't decide if I want to delete the originals (the biggest, but then I obviously can't re-make clips or extend them if I need to) or the edited clips (less space, and would mean re-making them if I ever lost them on YouTube or something, but I'd still have the originals.) I'll probably employ a rolling deletion system. When I run out of space I'll just delete the oldest files (unless there is something particularly bad.) Who'd have thought that this whole recording thing would cause such a dilemma

I picked up a 1tb external drive to store all the video on, so far there's over 380gb on there! Think i need to get deleting!

Yeah when I was using my mac the other week I was notified I had very little storage space left an when I checked it was 300gb of bloody video I wouldn't mind but it's the kids mucking about on most of it so it's one of the is that a funny bit yes no oh but that's good . Going to get Final Cut Pro or alike and edit it all down into some funny clips and burn onto DVDs . I have a 2TB nas drive with a second 2TB drive to mirror the first.
but can't get time machine working on it. Anyone techy enough to help?

Timemachine can be hit or miss sometimes, i've been using a Time Capsule for the past 6 years but every now and again time machine decides it no longer wants to backup and i have to start a fresh. It had helped my out once when my HD failed. I've been meaning to buy a NAS and set it up as RAID 1 but just never got around to it. I'm into Photography and got over 100gb of RAW images that need to be moved onto a new HD and backed up. Never really been that much into video mainly due to the file sizes and the time it takes to edit.
