Bit of a necro post, but I just go invited to the beta for zwift. will report back, but it'll be installing all night on my crappy net connection (annoying I can't just download it at work with 100MG/s+ download speeds and bring it home on a DVD). Cool - i signed up but never got an invite. I think to start with if you didn't have a compatible trainer then they didn't invite you, they're no rolling out to other trainers.

I applied once I ordered a compatible trainer (I thought I'd get in sooner). I also listed somewhere that I wrote and run an online game, so am well used to testing and the detail required for useful bug reports... which I would consider a massive swing factor.

I got a Zwift invite over the weekend and just had a go of it. It's not bad at all! Definitely adds a new element to being on a turbo. It's a 5km circuit around an island, with two segments, a 200m sprint and a 600m-ish climb. The current online leader of those segments gets to wear the respective green or polka dot jersey. I had the green jersey for a bit after putting the hammer down for a few seconds: There weren't a huge amount of people on, and people were going at all sorts of speeds so I only rode with people for short sections. The drafting is a bit funny, you'll just be pedalling as normal and you'll zip past them and then sit right on their front wheel, and then they'll do the same back and forth. It feels a bit clunky but should improve over time, this is still in beta after all. Every so often you get a 'powerup' which either makes you lighter, so faster up hills, or increases your drafting speed, etc. They felt like a bit of a novelty so I didn't play around with them too much, and you activate them by pressing space on your keyboard which isn't easy when on the bike. Of course it's no substitute for being out on the road, but I can definitely see myself using this when forced onto the trainer, it's a good distraction and has enough for you to do a real workout with intervals etc if you wanted. However, if I were just going to do a low intensity hour long spin, I'd probably be more likely to put on a tv show or film or something else. It's worth a go if you get a chance. I've had the Zwift beta for a while and would echo the above - unfortunately though for me it's just not practical trying to do structured training and then getting distracted by the virtual competitions!
I must say that having a coach giving me set turbo sessions has vastly improved my ability to use mine - just a Garmin and a decent mix is all I need nowadays. I used to hate the turbo, but now see it as a training tool that when used correctly can reap benefits for when you're back out on the road. It's also a lot easier to stick to power numbers when you can constantly 'Chris Froome' at your Garmin and not have to watch the road ahead!

I just got the bkool pro trainer and sim. Really impressed so far, but I am new to road bikes and riding in general. approx 500,000 routes
