Hi B'twin owners,
I have just ordered my first B'twin in the most basic of road cycling forms; the Triban 300. I already own a carbon Trek Emonda SL5 and a decent mountain bike so this is purely for commuting purposes upon a move this Friday to Linlithgow. The bike shall certainly be put through it's paces enduring up to 40 miles each day. I am used to cycling these distances and the strain it puts on bikes.
What I would like to know is what problems I should be expected to face with this particular bike? Do these cheaper brand microshift gears work as well people say? Are there any components minus the wheels, pedals and saddle that should really be replaced from the start?
Look forward to hearing from you all, you have a good forum going on here!
Dave

Hi Dave. I would most certainly replace the standard chain without even using it. Mine lasted 600 miles compared to 3,500 for subsequent replacements of KMC X8.93. This will avoid a lot of wear on your chainwheels and cassette. You can expect trouble with the standard wheels after as little as 1,000 miles. The cones self-destruct. Shimano R501 or RS11's are popular replacements but choose wisely if an 11 speed group set is ever going to be on the cards. Make sure you tighten the bottom bracket to 50-70 nm as many are loose from the factory. Don't forget to fit your favourite saddle too as few get on with the standard saddle.
Other than that, enjoy your new bike.
I currently hold the club record for the most miles on one of these bikes, nearly 13,000 - sorry @davefy7 but yours is Triggers bike, and have had no trouble with the microSHIFT components. They are robust.

They are robust. I did over 11,000 Triban miles when it was red (and fast), Roysters. You current set up doesn't count either under your rules. It's not an original Triban 3a as you changed the forks so in effect you have a mix of the Triban 3a and the Triban 3 just as I have a mix of the Triban 3 and the Triban 500.

A welcome to Gritt And to say your two avatars are scarily familiar, it looks like a golfing forum when you are both posting with/against each other

Hello and a warm welcome Dave. I cycle through Linlithgow almost daily as I live over the hill in the quaint little fishing village that nestles on the banks of the Forth...(smile!)

Hi - welcome to the forum echo what Rocket said. my wheels only lasted 1 winter commuting. but can advise shoving a handful of grease in the bearings before you start to make em last longer. enjoy the ride

Hi guys. I admit I may have posted this and then completely forgot about it! Thank you to you all for the warm welcome and for the advice regarding parts etc, very much appreciated.
The standard rear wheel lasted a solid 2 weeks before the bearings began to eat themselves but the front wheel did a little better at just over a year. The Microshift gears started to become quite clumsy and admittedly I didn't put much emphasis on keeping them in tip top condition with the bike just being used as a work horse. That said they got over 6000 kilometres in them before they were swapped out for a 105 groupset from my old Scott CR1 Team along with carbon front forks. Transformed.
Although the bike isn't used as heavily now as it once was it has still gathered well over 20,000 kilometres, has a Mavic Aksium Elite wheelset, new crank, bars etc. The only things that are still standard on it are the frame and seat post. It has been to England twice and taken part in a few sportives.
My plans are to turn it into a bit of an Audax based bike built for distance. Next year I am going to try to take part in LEL (London Edinburgh London) again but this time with the B'Twin. I still have a carbon road bike for knocking the guts out of but quite honestly I prefer riding this. A bizarre love story. Stay in touch, I promise to pay more attention to this thread!
Happy cycling folks.
