On today's ride there were a couple of lads who I hadn't seen for a while. They had been absent due to colds. As we hit the first climb to Standedge they requested that the pace be dropped as they were struggling. This got me to thinking about my own take on colds.
Whenever I have a cold I go out and give it as much as I can to get my temperature up. The way I see it is that a cold is a virus designed to live at body temperature and it makes us feel lethargic so we do nothing and keep our temperature down. Heat things up a bit and it will kill it off. I have strangely set PR's and the odd KOM when full of a cold and I firmly believe this helps me rid of them sooner.
So the next time you have a cold don't use it as a reason not to ride your bike - use it as the reason to ride your bike all the more. It works for me. What do you think people?

Well I did just that today, just as you were typing this very missive. I was out, at least in part, because I know you try to ride your cold off and I thought I would try and do the same. I have to confess I was calling you names at a couple of points along the way but thanks anyway (and I really mean that Roy!)

I've got Dr in front of mine and I can say Isle of Wight with a head cold last week was far more enjoyable than local ride with a chest cold today. Then again they were two very different rides and I'm not a doctor of medicine, so I wouldn't put too much store in that, although when I first started on the thing my kids assumed they would be able to come to me when they were not well, rather than go up to the GP surgery. They are older and wiser now!

I was sure I was getting a head cold last night. Tickly feeling in the throat and first signs of a dripping nose.
Took two lots of First Defence through the evening. Now that stuff does make you feel worse than a cold ever could for about five minutes but lo and behold no cold this morning. I do have a cough and a tight chest though (possibly due to having ten fags on Tuesday night, following a cold bike ride that had me wheezing a bit) so have kept indoors today. Hopefully I'll be breathing well enough to hit the gym tomorrow and get in the saddle on Sunday.

My ride a couple of weeks ago with a heavy-ish cold and cough was an absolute nightmare - I could not get my breath on even moderate hills and really, really struggled.
However, I went out a day or two ago, and also didn't feel great despite being symptom free. That's just down to overall lack of fitness now though, I think.
Having done the research (too late) I think I'd stick with the 'above the neck' probably OK, but 'in the chest' give it a rest theory. I'd also add that if you're running a temperature I'd probably pass too, the body is already under enough stress in that situation perhaps.
The relationship between catching lots of colds and overtraining is fairly well established too, I believe. For me though, that's hardly a great concern.

I had a chesty cold that lasted a few weeks in December. I decided to not bother with the cycling to work after coughing up half a lung when I arrived at my destination! The cold and often poor air quality at this time of year means it's probably even worse to ride in winter. It certainly irritates my airways
