Very impressive. I have had good experiences with Merlin and I am sure this is going to be a success although they don't have the marketing clout of Deca or Halfords so the average non enthusiast who is the target in this price range may not get to know about it. I have to say it doesn't look too bad in black either.

Looks like a good deal, although not sure an 8 speed double is best for that market.

OK...own up, which one of the members is working at Merlin and given them the inside track? On paper this seems to cover a lot of the minor issues with the original T3. Gone are the thumb shifters, much bigger clearance for tyres, some people struggle with the triple set up and the 34 front 30 rear will be very similar to the gearing the T3 came with. Shimano crank to replace the duce (I think that this is what it is called). Better wheels (probably with some grease
I suppose a lot of us over the years have bought some upgrades from Merlin (I think my crank and wheels came from them), so they probably know a bit about the Triban.
Oops, before someone else comes in, I know....it should have been red!
Someone has given it a 4/5 review on their site for an uncomfortable saddle, what would you expect with this spec at £300. Oh well.

The B'TWIN breakaway has been soaked up by the peloton ...

... now all they need is an Olympics and a home grown (part time edgy Oasis stylie) TdF winner !

I agree it does look a great spec for the money, but question how much extra tyre clearance it has with similar brakes, some 28mm tyres (just) fit Tribans, and the Merlin has no front mudguard eyes. There is also the mail order issue of trying for size and taking back to sort minor (or major) issues (depending where you are of course)

The Merlin P7 gets a very good review in November's issue of CyclingActive. The test covered "value bikes from just £299"
90/100 - "Incredible value. Possibly the best £300 bike anywhere"
It was pipped to 1st place by a £654.99 Calibre Stat (91/100)
They tried to get hold of a B'Twin Triban 500 for the test but failed.
"We tried everything we could to get the Triban 500 in this test but stock was almost sold out nationwide as we went to press...... B'Twin is still the bike maker to beat"

It's £330 though. Calling it £299 and then adding thirty quid "set up" charge doesn't make it less so.

Can you please link to the set up charge you mention? It's standard Merlin postage. I had to pay it when I bought my single-speed from them. Took the price I paid from £269 to £299. Unless you live near their store then there's no way to avoid it.
