I rode 45 miles today (about my limit at the moment) and I was going good until the last 5 miles or so where I had a few steep short climbs and these really zapped my energy: www.strava.com/activities/195716059/analysis/1328/1367Normally an hour or so after getting home my energy levels are back and I can continue pottering about, not today though. 3 hours later i was still completely drained of energy and i cant think why. Before the ride i ate a big bowl of fruit and fibre. During the ride i took my usual 500ml and 750ml bottles with 3 electrolyte carb free tabs split between them, most of this was drank. I took a wrap with me split into 2, filled with peanut butter and jam, I ate half a wrap 50% of the way through and the other half 75% of the way through. So i thought i was well fuelled for this ride and was going well all the way up to that last 5 miles which i wasn't too surprised about the tiredness with but i dont know why it took me so long to recover. Has anyone got any ideas why I had this long energy crash or tips for future rides?

Most confusing. You pre-loaded and had adequate food intake at good timing for such a short ride. Did you do a 150 miler the day before?

Didn't realise you live down in my neck of the woods Tim!
Not sure what was happening here. Sounds like you were fueled up in a similar way to other rides of similar length. Doesn't look like you went out too fast (I've tried to grab a local KoM at the start of a ride of similar length before warming up properly and have found that to be a bad move). Having looked at your last couple of similar rides before this one it doesn't look like your average speed was an issue and the average power is similar. Others may have some extra insight but I guess it may just be one of those days. Have you been especially active in other ways in recent days other than on the bike/Strava?

Haha, Ive not done much exercise since my last ride on Saturday (40 miles) apart from working on my house and garden , so theres no issue there, my muscles were ready for it. The only thing different to usual is that i have reduced my calorie intake in the last couple of days but not drastically. I'm just trying to cut out the bad treats so i dont think this is a major factor as im not going hard enough at the diet yet.

just a bad day - just a thought - how did you sleep last night?

Low blood sugar levels are the culprit. Get noshin them treats again and take some lardy cake with you until you adjust gradually. I used to struggle on a 35 mile hilly route and nearly passed out once. After conditioning I can now do 75 miles with hills without any extra food as my glycogen stores increased.

I had a good sleep last night Eric (why do people alway ask me how do i sleep at night :-P) so I wasn't overly tired, i actually left an hour later than planned due to sleeping in a bit.
OK rocket I'll sugar up a bit more, I thought that the jam and peanut butter would do that for me though. I normally have more carby food such as bread instead of wraps or flap jacks. Maybe I'll stick to them when out.
