So... hit the velodrome tonight for first proper ride in 3 weeks. It was quick in the fast group as @veganpower would atest, then very suddenly at ~15miles (so not too far) BANG. Left calf cramp so bad I've had nothing like it before, I yelped in pain and physically couldn't turn my leg. I put all my will into unclipping it and 1 foot pedalled to the safe zone, I couldn't stand on it, stretching it just didn't work, I couldn't control it at all.
An hour and a half later and it still tense as hell, the foam roller isn'yt touching it, nor digging my thumbs in.
This is probably payback for several weeks of drinking every evening (though never exactly OTT).
Anyhow, any tips for getting rid of it? Not sure I can sleep with this!

Yeah, you guys left me for dust tonight.

Hope it's feeling even better now r0b1et. My dad used to use an infrared heat lamp to ease his cramps.

Yeah, felt much better this morning and my short commute in sorted it out. Then rode 55miles this afternoon/evening and no return - though the other leg was threatening at times.
Still, any tips for getting rid I'd appreciate for future reference. Stretching was a physical impossibility and digging my fingers in did nothing.

I have no advice for getting rid of it. but common causes for it are low sodium and potassium levels and being dehydrated. you are not taken creatine by any chance? if you are then you have to increase water intake to help fight off cramps.

Stand on the good leg holding something for balance, put your toes of your bad leg on the ground...then spend the next hour trying to get your heel to touch the floor whilst wimpering like a lonely puppy.
Also, cramp is caused by dehydration, so rehydrate and bolt some water down you, eventually it'll get carried to the muscle.
It hurts like hell but theres not much else you can do but stretch it out. I know some people put deep heat/freeze sprays on which apparently helps them, but id not advocate it.

It's Β£5.55 for non members With my sneaky NUS card (as a member of uni, even if not a student) I only pay Β£2.60 - yay me. Note that Tuesdays (and in the winter Thursday's too) are road bikes (i.e. proper brakes) only, they have track bikes on other evenings.

We'll do that soon then, I'm teaching a couple of days a week including Tuesdays and Thursdays for a few weeks but it drops back to a single day after that (Thursdays), so I'll be able to make it at some point on a Tuesday, keep me posted when you're going, it'd be good to come and have a social - it's not much further to your spot than going to Newport. What's the age range? I may bring the lad at some point.

I will try to go most days now the darkness limits safe road riding - but not in the rain - I did that once, bike and I got more filthy than riding on the road, and the occasional nutter goes from "a bit annoying but soon sorted out by a chat" to "dangerous loon". Age range... vast, early teens (cheeky buggers have no slipstream) to 80 (well that's the oldest I've spoken to).

My boy is only just 12, he may be too young but if we're making the trip then I'd like to bring him along, he's ridden the Newport Velo several times, so is reasonably competent as the banks there are 43% and you need to clock circa 18mph to stick on them. He's safe as long as those around him are decent, as young kids aren't really road savvy without guidance and more susceptible to being taken out by idiots - if you think about it, a 12 year old has never driven in traffic like most adults or as smart as older kids at judging braking and relative speeds, he is in the early stages of experience and rides with me directing him like a Sargent Major. As a gauge, he can road ride at an average of 24 kmh for over an hour now over undulating terrain and is faster on the track for shorter spells, so if you could suss out if he'd be OK from the organisers next time you're there, then it would be much appreciated.

Radchenister Sounds like he'd be more than fine to be honest, stick to the basic rules (over take on the inside, don't run around the inside, try not to brake, hand signals) and generally it all works rather well, I went practically every week last winter and only saw one accident and it was very minor (caused by a dropped bottle). There are coloured lines which while not mentioned in the rules, get used as a reference, going ~20mph on the blue, the quicker group doing 22-24mph usually on the red and nutters doing TT practice hammering round the inside. A bit of calling and it tends to work pretty well. Palmer Park Velodrome is long ~460m outdoor tarmac with 22degree banking, not much at all, flat enough to pull away on if you had to. www.readingvelodromeracing.co.uk

Thanks, yep I was just trying to gauge pace on that course so good info' - I'd probably pace him round for a while to settle him in before leaving him to it and having a faster blast myself.
