Justin, too hard too soon is the only thing that springs to mind from your description of your ride. Fuelling should not be an issue on such a short ride and the fact that you have successfully completed these climbs in the past means they are within your capabilities. More so now that you are lighter. Next time don't hammer the flat bits before the climbs. Was the wind in your face possibly?

@whitestarb52001 some of us are no spring chickens any more, some are fitter than others at our age, as Roy says prolly to hard to soon, get up the hills at your own pace, no need to try and break records (your own) because some days you will get up them quicker than others as it all depends on how the body feels on a particular day, take it easy, your not in a race, with time you should be able to get up hills a bit faster but they are never easier

I can go along with what's been shared already. For me at my age it's all down to pace and gears. Before any serious hills I like to warm up well and although i'm on them regularly if the pace is wrong it's slow motion mode.
Great news on the weight loss given time and patience that is sure to make a difference.
All the best

it is easy to get excited and carried away when a ride is going great. echo what others have said - take it easy and pace it.

On hills - start slow/easy as you can. You can always accelerate/attack towards end of a hill if feel fine but start slow. Far better than lots I people I see who will charge off at start then die half way up.

Great advice gents thank you, totally agree its Stravas fault when i turn out of my road there are 2 segments within seconds of starting off really fast fun segments with a steady downhill then flat bit, First climb manage about 9 to 10 mph nice and steady then it flattens out but not for long then its a steady progressive climb followed by an insane descent if your brave enough thinking about it more there isnt a huge amount on this route that arent lumpy to say the least and towards the end of the ride there are the 2 climbs i failed on the second is to get back home as i live on the top of a hill will try and warm up properly and not steam off at the start of the ride its just so liberating ........................ clip in pedal and fly ............................

Would not feel to bad. In some ways it is good for you to blow out. You have have to stress your body for it to know it needs to adapt and improve. Being out of breath and jelly legged is a clear message to your body it need to build endurance and strength.
also keep in mind that on the bike you are wearing and tearing your body down and you build and improve when you rest and sleep. So being under rested and recovered will harm your performance.

You live in a very hilly part of the world, I did a 45 mile route today and climbed the same height that you did in your 20 miler, so dont try to push too hard too soon. Can you choose an easier route around the climbs you had to walk up?
Also I've always been told that your body can only store enough energy for about 90mins, this ride was 2hrs so maybe take a flap jack or something similar to help fuel yourself as you go around.
Great work on the weight loss though, keep up the good work
