So here's the review of my Triban 5 after 5,000km of commuting. Bought it to replace a much loved Dolan Preffisio which was nicked last summer near my home in Dublin. My Triban 5 is used solely for commuting (40km / day) and has been through it's first winter. Upgrades:Carried out the following pretty much straight after acquiring my T5: - Fitted 2 x Shimano R501 wheels. Major improvement. Reliable and good rolling
- Fitted 2 x Continental Grandprix tyres (23c). The clearance on these is tighter than the stock B'Twin tyres, as a result I've had to leave off my front mudguard. Bit of a pain.
- Fitted pair of Crud Racer II mudguards.
- Replaced stock Wellgo pedals with Shimano M530 double-sided SPD pedals.
- Fitted 2 water bottles (don't really use them commuting, but might take detours home over the summer so they'll come in handy)
Consumables:- Brake blocks - the stock ones were ok and lasted and performed better than anticipated. Currently using Salmon Kool Stop.
- Bottom bracket - Replaced the stock one at about 3,000km with an Ultegra BB. Major improvement in terms of action and longevity.
- Replaced cassette (Shimano Tiagra 12-27), chain (Shimano 105) and front chain rings (BBB BCR-11S 50T & 39T)
Breakages:- Only real failure has been the saddle - I broke one of the rails after a couple of months.
All in all a great bike. Really comfortable (I'm using a 57.5cm @ 187cm/ 6'2" tall).

Here's my review at approximately 13,500km. Bike has over all served me well and proven to be a great and reliable commuter and winter bike. I've changed jobs so it does about 30km per day commuting and anything up to 130km plus on weekend spins.
Since I wrote the above, I've carried out the following:
Added a new R501 rear wheel to replace one written off hitting road debris. The front R501 is showing some rim wear, so have refitted the stock Triban wheel on the front. Bearings in both wheels serviced (cleaned, de-greased and re-greased, cones adjusted).
2 new 23c gatorskins tyres fitted.
A second 12-27 9 speed cassette
A second 9 speed chain
Rear crud racer cracked and was replaced
Brake pads - probably on about set 4 at this stage.
Rear dereailleur cable replaced
Bottom bracket is coming up for replacement (a bit of movement indicates the bearings are starting to wear. It's proven more durable than sora and tiagra ones).

Review at approx. 20,000km. The Triban has servied me for commuting as well a decent 'winter' bike on club weekend rides.
Since my last report, I've had to replace the rear Shimano R501 wheel - the rim cracked in a pothole. I ran the stock Triban wheels for circa 6 months, then recently replaced them with a set of cheaper Shimano R010's.
Permanent mudguards fitted prior to last winter, as Crudracers were becoming a pain.
Rear Gatorskin from last re-fit starting to show wear, so a new rear will be fitted this weekend - there's about 7,000km on it, so well overdue.
New KMC chain and shimano 11-25 cassette fitted recently. New shimano ultegra bottom bracket (they do really last longer!) fitted as well.
All in all the bike goes great - it's served me for almost 3 years now and no intention of replacing it soon!

My Triban 5 just passed it's 3rd birthday.
Have to say it's been a great bike - it's served me well. Mileage to date probably about 22,000km. Just replaced both derailleur cables and fitted a new set of brake pads. Took time to lubricate the cables this time and the shifting has really improved.
I might replace the shifters (new Sora or Tiagra) if I find a pair at the right price, and I'm considering changing the triple chain set to a compact chainset. I rarely use the granny ring. Perhaps my next upgrade before I ready it for the winter!

My Triban has just passed it's 4th birthday. Around 30,000 km on it to date. It continues to serve me well for commuting and as a winter bike. This year I've carried out quite a bit of work.
The rear derailleur disintegrated a couple of weeks when I was cleaning it and was irreparable, and was fused to the hanger. So that's been my last job - a new hanger and 9 speed sora derailleur as well as a gear cable.
This year so far as well as the above:
I replaced the rear cassette and bottom bracket, both ultegra in February. They work faultlessly. New chain as well, an SRAM PC 991 chain. That will see me through 2017.
New gatorskin rear tyre fitted a few weeks back. Original tyre lasted about 5,000 km, front showing signs of wear so will keep this in check.
The seat post pin fractured on me earlier in the year. It's got an unusual diameter bolt that I couldn't source. Replaced the seat post in it's entirety with a new seat clamp.
Swiss stop break pads fitted on the rear. They last longer than big standard ones and perform better in the wet.

Triban review at 10 years, well over 60,000 km covered at this stage. Its looking a bit worse for wear but still a reliable and comfortable workshorse. I even completed a 180km mountain cycle with over 3,000m of elevation in June. Recently fitted new chain and cassette and front rings are next. Still on oroginal shimano mtb pedals i put on in 2012. Wheels are coming up for a change. Rear wheel i replaced sometime around 2015 so has served me well. Next up is two new gatorskins and get set for the winter.

I wonder how many of the early T3's are still on the road & still owned by those early members. I still have mine as does Phred ( both posh one's) & Martin. Good writeup by the way .
