Possibly a minor point, but aren't the Red T3 shifters actually 2303s rather than 2300? I only point this out as I was reading about the "trim" function in the 2300s, which is only available for setups with 2 chainrings at the front, and the manual for the 2300s makes the distinction between the 2303 and the 2300 in that the 2303 doesn't have this trim function for a large / large combination, whereas it does for the small / small combination. See techdocs.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/SI/2300/SI_6SF0A_001/SI-6SF0A-002-ENG_v1_m56577569830683910.pdfMatt

2300 is just the generic name given to that group set.
There 4 different shifters in the 2300 setup: ST-2300 ST-2303 ST-R221 ST-R225
Like with every Shimano group set.
It's done to keep it easy and simple, if you start flinging about every tech spec name it could get complicated.
For example to find the shifters on Wiggle you have to type in '2300 triple'. Or '105 double', 'triple' and not the 'code'.
It's not the only way, just the most common way of finding or naming parts.

Similar thing with the Chainset. 105 for instance is 5700 (50/39t) and 5750 for the compact (50/43t)
