I'm all for home made food and drinks for bike rides and cake is always a good fuel. Anyone else got any recipes for bike food and want to share?
Here's a simple no egg cake recipe that my Mum used to make which is really moist and similar to malt loaf. I think it is ideal as bike cake.
All Bran Loaf
Ingredients 1 cup All Bran 1 cup Milk 1 cup Self raising flour (you can use wholewheat flour) 1 cup Mixed Dried Fruit (I tend to use Apricots and Prunes for a juicier cake) & Almonds (if desired) 1/2 cup or 1 cup Soft brown sugar (depending on desired sweetness) A standard loaf tin Method Well grease your loaf tin, and preheat the oven to 170C/fan 150C/gas 5. Use any old cup to measure the ingredients. Pour the All bran and milk into a bowl. Leave the All Bran to soak up the milk (about 5-10 mins.) Add the self raising flour and sugar to your mixture and stir. Cut up your dried fruit (if using prunes and apricots) and add the fruit to your mixture and stir. The mixture should be thick and sticky, if it isn't you may wish to add a bit more milk. Transfer the mixture to your loaf tin and put in the oven for one or one to one and a half hours. Check on the loaf after one hour with a knife or skewer in the middle, if it comes out clean the loaf is cooked, if not leave it in a little longer.
As the weather was awful on Saturday so instead of riding I made a biltong dryer, the meat is in and should be ready on Thursday. I'll report back on how it turns out.

The cake is tasty but the winner for me is that it's so easy to make.
It's my first batch of biltong @brad0123 so I've read some articles and made some stuff up!
First I salted the meat for a couple of hours, then wiped with kitchen roll. Then made a marinade with crushed and toasted coriander seed, black pepper, a dash of Lea and Perins, a dash of tabasco, a table spoon of sugar and a couple of table spoons of cider vinegar. That soaked for 24 hours with the odd stir. Then a wash in boiled water and vinegar and a final dry with kitchen roll before sticking it in the box.
I opened up the box 24 hours later and it's drying quite quickly, the box is small and I've used a 60w bulb - a 30 or 40 watt bulb should slow things down.
Do you have any tips or recipes? I tried a very thin bit last night and I think I need more salt and maybe a final dip in dry spices before it goes in the dryer.

Here's my 3rd biltong Cure. The salting and cure time are spot on for how I like my biltong. This batch is HOT as I used some Isle of Wight Apocalypse Chilli sauce in the marinade. Biltong is a great post ride snack imo as it provides protein and electrolytes.

I've also been making my own sports drink.
Based on a 500ml bidon, add one small glass of fruit juice, 6 tea spoons of brown sugar (or glucose), 1/4 teaspoon of salt and top up with tap water. Shake well.

Shake well. I've made my own drinks for years now for both cycling and swimming. In a 500ml bottle I'll add a good splash of Ribena (full fat), 1 tea spoon of sugar and a good pinch of sea salt, mix with tap water then give it a good shake. I used to make my own cake and bars but now find Soreen malt loaf on its own or made into thin sandwiches with either Flora or peanut butter is as good as anything. It always seams to be on offer in the supermarkets as well. I know some don't get on with Malt loaf as it can be a tad sticky, to carry and eat, and some find it heavy on the stomach. I loves it

Soreen is great, I had a generous lump on my ride last weekend, the bran loaf up top is similar, but not as sticky. The the Ribena drink sounds good too, will have to have a go at that.

try these... very tasty... plenty of fuel... and the fat content will give you huge incentive to push yourself harder 295g unsalted butter 150g Dark Soft Brown Cane Sugar 110g Golden Syrup 500g rolled oats Pinch salt 2 medium oranges, zested, plus 3-4 tbsp juice 110g dark chocolate chips Icing Sugar & Cocoa, to dust melt the butter, sugar and syrup together over a low heat once its all melted and combined, add in the oats orange juice/zest and salt and mix well. wait till its properly cooled - add the chocolate chips, and pop it all in a greased tin. press down well and pop it the oven (180Β°C/Fan 160Β°, 350Β°F, Gas 4.) for 10-30 mins (until golden brow) let it cool a bit, cut it up and take it out the tin - then when fully cooled dust with the cocoa/icing sugar I sometimes melt a bar of chocolate over the top instead

TOP FLAPJACK. Half a box of your favorite musli. Melt 200 grams of salt free butter. Combine and mix well. Add 50 grams of golden syrup. Mix well.
Heat oven up to 200deg c. Spread mixture into deep tray and score into bar shaped sections.
Place in oven.
Chat to wife, pump up tyres, say goodbye to wife as she goes off to see daughter and grandchildren.
Change into your MAMIL gear. GO FOR 2 HOUR CYCLE. RETURN TO HOME ... BILLOWING WITH SMOKE. OPEN ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS. EXTINGUISH FLAMES FROM BURNING TRAY OF STUFF. THROW THE TRAY OF CARBONISED MUSLI INTO GARDEN.
And breathe !!!!!!!
