Evening All,
My first post here so hello everyone. Almost a year to day that I stopped all exercise due to huge herniation of the disk at L5/S1 level I'm beginning to feel (the need) ready to get on the bike again. I had surgery to decompress the nerve in early September. 8 weeks later, following physio's advice, stretching, walking as much I can, etc. Just wondering if anyone else out there had similar experiences.

Don't know if my situation relates directly to yours. I had surgery at L4-S1 3 years ago after a badly prolapsed disc. This required decompression of the nerve and fusion of the vertebrae using 2 titanium rods and 6 screws with bone grafts. I have a small amount of residual and permanent nerve damge causing numbness and some pain in my right foot and leg - nothing serious
I had to pack up running - common sense really - but have recently taken to cycling (bought the T3a in July 13). My legs still struggle - particulary the front of my upper legs which seem to be constantly sore, but I have had no issues whatsoever with my back as a result of cycling. I use the T3a whenever I can and have an old MTB for off-road or bad weather use. I have really taken to cycling and now don't miss running so much.
My personal view is that cycling is helping with core strength and general fitness which is helping my spine. I've done a few 2-hour plus rides and have more aches in my hands, legs and Jenny Taylor than in my back.
Don't know if this is any help to you, but wish you luck
BBG

Many thanks All, particularly BBG. Got go ahead from physio to get on bike, just waiting for a dry, windless day to get lift from wife to top of my old, usual, circuit to get a gentle , mostly downhill ride back to home.
It'll be a start.
