I was chatting with a mate last week, and in the course of the conversation we wondered......
Did you 'put your pin in the map' on this forum (T3 owners club), or does Strava (or presumably similar sites) show your real location (I've put a blotted out circle round my address)......
........ reason for asking? her local police had warned that the bad guys out there trawl forums like this, and Strava, and thus know where some very nice bikes live.....

My pin is in the right area but not near enough to my home to worry about. I think its actually pointing to a private car park in some posh residential block that I could never afford to live in.

It may be reassuring to think that the thieves are not interested in our 'lowly' Tribans, however, if they're using unprotected Strava accounts to pinpoint potential targets, they'll still take the chance to see what lies within. If they break in, chances are, even without taking anything, they'll still do damage, leaving you feeling vulnerable to further attacks. Undoubtedly there's a market for the 2K+ bikes, but if it's 'free' there's a market for everything, even if it means only being worth £50 to them. But there's no excuse for not taking every precaution with privacy settings on Strava, MapMyRide etc. Here's something I found a couple of weeks ago and meant to post before, and I hope it will ease the minds of Oldtimer and others, regardless of the cost of the bikes we own, it's the value that matters to us, and indeed everyone... Lock your GPS location on Strava etc
There’s a thief out there who wants your bike, and you could be making it very easy for them. Here’s how to lock down your privacy on Strava.
Everyone’s at it these days – recording rides with GPS, either on a smartphone app or better still, on a dedicated device like a Garmin. Sharing your achievements with friends via social networks has become the norm, popularised by sites like MapMyRide. Apart from annoying the people who are jealous that they can’t be arsed to get off the sofa don’t share your enthusiasm, what harm can it do? More than you think, if recent reports are anything to go by.
Thieves are using sites with GPS data to determine the likely storage locations of expensive bikes.
To guard yourself against this kind of thing, you need to lock down your security settings. The video below shows you a cool feature in Strava which allows you to set up a blind perimeter around specific locations. Your rides will still track as the correct distance, but people won’t see the exact start and end points of your rides.

Another tip on Strava is to call your bike(s) by a nickname(s) rather than stating the actual make & model.

Keep it real folks, nickname is ok, mine is listed as Radchenister but thinking about it I'd be better writing T3 just in case they think I'm on a Wiggo mobile.
I used to do the privacy thing but thought sod it, I like showing off my whole ride.
If some thieving scank wants to break in around here, he's got several hundred TT bikes to get through before getting to me. Where do you stop with this paranoid thought process, I probably draw more attention changing shoes at the front gate than any amount of Strava hiding will counteract.
Your Triban is more susceptible to the opportunist than the pre-meditated low life.
