As mentioned before, I went to the Milk Race in Nottingham on Sunday.
You can see details of it here....http://www.themilkrace.com/
The races took place on a course around the centre of Nottingham, and I think it was around 1.2km long. It was a great day for it, luckily, because it was a fairly twisty course and I was expecting carnage even when I saw it in the dry. It was quite up and down over a variety of surfaces. I saw only one faller, a chap came off a mountain bike on the slowest corner of the track.
The start/finish straight was in the main square in front of the council house and there were various sponsors, sadly mostly milk related. I would have liked to have some of the major dealers there too, I think they missed a chance, Evans has a shop in Nottingham, perhaps they weren't allowed to be there?
The course was fenced off along it's entire route with barriers, and in a few places there were crossing points. Now here was the problem. These crossing points were only open for about 15 minutes at a time, and they were crowded. The course cut across the main walkways through a very busy city on what turned out to be a very busy shopping day. It was ok if you were there to see the racing, but for a shopper it must have been a pain in the bum, because it was easy to cross into the 'infield' and then not have time to get to the next crossing poing to get out the other side.
I saw LOTS of very annoyed people stuck on one side or another, and I can't say I blame them. It really needed bridges or carefully monitored crossings to get people over the course. Unless they sort this out it could be the last time we see this which is a shame.
The races were preceded by public rides. You could register, pay and go around the course under closed race conditions. This looked fun but not for the faint-hearted; there were a lot watching and I would have been very self conscious I think if I'd had a go myself. The last of the public rides was a 'family' ride, where there were kids on tiny bikes alongside adults (this was especially galling for anyone waiting to cross..."they closed Nottingham for THIS?").
I only saw one race, and this was the women's race, which was 50 minutes plus 5 laps. Exciting if you're into racing, I'll admit I'm not really, I can take it in small doses but you can't see a deal from the side of a road and it's easy to get totally lost as to who's in front once back markers have been lapped a few times.
I believe the above is Dani King who managed to be about a lap in front of everyone else.
I think you can see the rest of my photos here...
