So I recently took my Triban RC520 to the local bike shop for a service following one of the chain links partially snapping when rapidly shifting up gears last week. I haven't done a huge amount of miles on it since I bought it last year due to injuries, but thought it was due a tune-up due to the brakes/gears not being 'perfect' anymore and an annoying creak in the headset.
Thing is, other than the chain snapping the bike was in relatively good nick. Most things were working fine - albeit not 'brand new bike' fine - but the bike shop seem to think it needs both the front and rear mechs replacing? Now don't get me wrong - i know that it's entirely possible that they need replacing (although i am bemused by this) and it's impossible for anyone on here to say they do or don't without looking at the bike, but the whole situation has been a bit weird. Took it in last week, didn't hear anything until they finally answered the phone this weekend and told me they had ordered parts (without asking whether I wanted them fitted or anything beyond the service/new chain) and then he explained that if I had leant my bike up against anything for too long then both the mechs could have broken.
I'm naturally a suspicious guy, but unfortunately one with very limited bike tech skills. I've leant bikes against walls for years and years without needing one new mech, let alone two! The bike has never been locked outside so no chance of someone else bashing any of the mechs. I've never crashed on it. How can both need replacing???

Does sound v strange. Was changing gear ok? I'd tell them not to bother personally and get the bike back.

As per the previous post it seems a bit strange. I think the only issue I've ever had apart from adjustment is a bent rear mech hanger after a fall. I would be looking for a second opinion.

I agree it would be hard to damage both mechs throwing your bike around if you tried, and there would be obvious damage. Get it off them asap.
