Hi
Having been lurking for a while and thouht now was the time to post.
I was saving for a 520 or 540 but now that I've ridden around the local store on a 500se am very tempted by one. My Birthday is coming up so might treat myself! Current road bike is my brothers old Terry Dolan winter training bike built from bits his mate had lying around but having not been happy with it for a while and having sat on a bike that fits me properly am very tempted to take the plunge on the basis that I don't think I can save enough for a 520 any time soon. The Dolan has served it purpose, which was to see if I enjoyed a road biking having been a mountain biker for years, however it is too small for me and many components are showing their age. Am also keeping an eye on Ebay for tribans that comes up within a reasonable distance of home.

Good luck with the search. I have the previous model of Triban 520, but if your budget can't stretch, I believe the 500se is more than capable. One thing to be aware of is this older frame isn't set up to take pannier racks or full mudguards, so if that's an issue you might consider the new model 500 which is £50 dearer: www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-500-road-bike-red-id_8377759.html

The guy in the shop recommended the 500 for the extra tyre clearance which might be a good option because my current bike runs 25mm tyres with full mudguards and with the plan being that this will be an all year round bike the 500 might be a better option. Does anyone know of any reviews of the 500 rather than the 500se?

You've just hit the nail on the head.
The current 500 is an upgrade of the 500SE. I have the T5A, which was the same frame and forks as the T500SE but with Sora rather than Microshift components. I have managed to semi-successfully run 25mm Schwalbe Luganos with Crud IIs, as long as I adjusted the Cruds every ride and cleaned the bike everytime - Lots of grey muck clogging everything up after riding in the rain. I have gone back to 23mm as it was too much hassle.
£50 for wider tyre/mudguard clearance is well worth it.

Im fed up of having to swap to 23's as well when i want to run guards and really want to keep the 25's on but they wont fit with my Crud II's. It looks like the SKS will fit but just trying to find somebody whos tried it.

Does anyone know of any reviews of the 500 rather than the 500se? There are plenty of reviews on the website. The 500 will certainly make a better entry level commuter which is what it's designed for with extra clearance and relaxed upright geometry. For longer, faster summer rides though the 500se has more sporty geometry, 2 sets of bottle cages a better chainset and replaceable mech hanger. The 520 really is worth the extra though if you can stretch to it, the frameset, wheels and groupset are all better.

chas, what type of bottom bracket is on the new 500? I see from the website the SE has a Claris crankset with an Octalink bottom bracket, but for the new model 500 the website only states Prowheel Ounce chainset. I'm considering getting the new 500 for winter use (fun rides, not commuting), and keeping my 520 as summer bike, but not sure if I'll be disappointed with the lower spec components, esp. Microshift. A more expensive option is for the 520 to become my winter bike, and next summer get a 900 AF.

It's a square taper cartridge bottom bracket, the chainset ist the one used on the original T3 and descendants until the se got a Claris upgrade

chas has mentioned the two things that are putting me off the 500 which are the Mech hanger and that the SE has a better chainset. The point of the bike would be a year round road bike for the pure enjoyment of it. In my opinion the SE is a better bike overall. A lot a of magazine reviews look down on triple chainsets but I Don't mind a triple beacause I live on the edge of the peak district and am not particularly fit so would actually be quite nice on the hills.

I have now officially joined the club I bought a 500SE from the Local Cyclists Fighting Cancer Charity Bike Shop. Was in there to collect an Elops 100 I had bought for my wife and I spotted the distinctive blue hoods of the 500SE gear/brake levers. It was in the back of the shop in a pile of bikes that had been donated and they had not managed to put on the shop floor yet. Only down side is that it is missing the crank set. However I recently put a Prowheel Crankset on my current road bike so thought that would be ideal to get it up and running just need a square taper BB for it. I only Paid £50 for it so just need to know what BB I need. Does anyone know? Maybe chas can help me.

There is a thread on here with the tech specs, from there the original red T3 (same frame) used a prowheel crank with a 115x68 English thread square taper bottom bracket

Have made a few mods to the 500SE. I bought a Claris groupset and some wheels for £50 from ebay. Put on the wheels because was not happy with the bearings in the decathlon ones and it now appears that the freehub has seized when I tried to make use of the old rear wheel yesterday. I previously put on the claris crankset and octalink BB and have been riding it with that recently.
Yesterday I was browsing the Cyclists Fighting Cancer Charity Bike Shop and mentioned that I was looking to improve the groupset, on the bike I had previously bought from them. The guy in the shop went into the back and pulled out a Shimano 105 FC5700 standard crankset and asked £10 for it. I bit his hand off and then he went into his bits box and produced a BB for it which he threw into the deal.
I have now fitted the crankset and also the claris mech and 11-32 cassette that came with the groupset I bought from ebay. The Charity bike shop are on the lookout for more 105 bits for me.
I still feel like I need better wheels which may need to come to complete the 105 gearing, due to the change from 8 speed.
Anyway I'm now working towards having a bike spec'ed similarly to a 540 having started from an incomplete 500SE dragged out of a pile of bikes in the back store of the local charity bike shop. It has become a bit of a project to do this with parts mostly obtained from the charity bike shop. Will take some pics on my next ride.
