Hi all,
I'm looking to get a Triban 500 flat bar, as seems like a good value entry bike for someone dipping their toes into road biking, however I'm unsure of the frame size I should get.
My measurements: Height: 165cm (5ft 5) Inside leg: 29.5in Arm span: 162.5cm
I did pop into a Decathlon store earlier today, and sat on the small, but it felt like childs bike when I sat on it, in contrast I was at another Decathlon store where I tried the 520 in small and it felt fine. I did also sit on the medium 500 and it felt ok, although I didn't ride it properly. I learned that the 500 in the small frame comes with 650c wheels rather than 700c, which is why I may have felt like it was different to the small size 520 I rode the other day?
Can anyone give any advice on what size might be appropriate? I wouldn't want to buy a bike and either regret it was too small, or find that the medium is wrong for me and start getting aches!
Thanks

I am about an inch taller than you with an inside leg of 30in. I have had a red T3 for over four years now. I faced the same dilemma and was tempted to go for the 52 frame which I believe was the equivalent of today's small frame. I was advised by the Decathlon salesman to go for the 54 frame and I am glad I did. I fitted a stem which is 20mm shorter which brought the reach in line with the smaller bike. You may be happy to keep the bike as it is but if you want to upgrade the wheels and tyres at a later date your choice will be restricted if you have 650c wheels. I would also think seriuosly about getting the drop bar version. If you do get the road biking bug you may find the flat bars a limitation after a while.

I'd ask a couple of mechanics from both stores and get what they have to say - get them to put pro's and con's. How much of a "sat on" was it? Any saddle/bar changes? Oxford staff gave me a spot on size choice.
