Anybody got any experience or words of wisdom for riding Winnats pass without bailing out and walking. Doing it as part of a Peaks ride next weekend. I have the 32 front - 30 rear, is it doable with that combo?
Cheers

Some of our Northern Powerhouses have done Winnats multiple times ( Rocket and erictherat for sure). It sounds like a beast but if you're not facing a funnelling headwind I suspect 32/30 should certainly make it doable.

Last time I did it was on 39/26 but it was a bit of a struggle... Obvious advice but take your time if it's your first go, the approach to the bottom is deceptive so don't wear yourself out before the climb really starts.

Cheers I found Winnats pass quite a challenge to be honest even with 30 front 32 rear and took me three different occasions to finally conquer it as it is quite steep in places. I got home feeling a sense of achievement and proudly mentioned it to my better half, but she gave me a rollicking and told me not to over do itπ§ I'm not in the same league as some of the athletes on this great forum and you probably will not have any problems Richard if you relatively fit, but please be careful

due to the westward looking funnel shape of the land, there is always a headwind, but that eases as you take the right turn.
It looks worse than it is. approaching the cattle grid at the start, Im already in a very low gear and it looks like a wall. you can always do just one more turn of the cranks.
enjoy it.

Thanks for the tips. I was contemplating getting a 32t cassette just for the one time use and then send it back lol. It's prob the only time I'll do it as its quite out my way so wanna make it worth my while I manage to ride it.

It's a tough one but you should be fine with that combo. First time i did it was with a 39/28 and i bailed and had to walk the rest of the way but i'd already done Snake and Holme Moss. Last time was with a 36/32 and it wasn't too bad. Just take it easy going up as it's a gradual climb that ramps up once you get to the cafe and mine entrance.
I was meant to be doing that ride but can't make it now. Think Winnats is early on in the ride which should make it easier.

I did it last year (on 34/28) and had to have a sneaky rest half way up (caused by having done the Beast of Bradwell immediately beforehand)... triban3owners.freeforums.net/post/107843/threadAs chas mentioned above, there's a reasonably long drag to the start of the pass (which starts at the cattle grid just after the car park on the right) which can drain you before you even start.

It's gets steeper near the summit so save your legs. I've done it twice and it is a very hard climb, the hardest I've done in fact. I still can feel the burning in my lungs now. By the way my 11 y.o has done it twice too without walking π

Did you do it as part of the Tour of the Peak ride?
I did the long route on Sunday and loved this climb, it's beautiful and if you did the long route it's certainly the steepest out of the 'headline' climbs of this, Holme Moss and The Cat & The Fiddle. However, it never felt like it was ever going to beat me. Holme Moss & The Cat never seem to go much over 10% but are both long slogs. The toughest bit of Wn acts, I found was the amount of cycling traffic. As it was relatively early in the ride (within first 25m of a 113m ride) the mix of abilities meant there was a lot of 'get off & walkers' getting in the way, zig-zaggers also caused their fair share of difficulties. I'd like to go back on a quieter day and see if I can go much faster.

Done it loads times on the T3a using 30 x 28 it's a steep climb try to be in a low gear and spin to save your legs for further up the climb the climbing really starts after the cattle grid. The gear I use on the triple is the same as using a compact 34 x 32 in inches.
