I have a rather big birthday coming up in the summer and have permission for an extravagant purchase if I want one. But, I'm not sure what I should go for? - A new bike? Maybe a Ultra AF GF to replace my T5 as a commuter and year round bike? (Disc being a positive. No mudguard eyes a negative) Seems a shame now I have Aksiums and decent brakes on the T5! Would the AFGF, or maybe the 720AF Ultegra replace my Mach? But I love my Mach !! Anyway, would a +Β£1k bike be worth it? - New lycra? I have lots of cheap stuff plus one expensive item (Gabba) Maybe I should get some maching FKW BTwin stuff for the Mach? All the rest of my stuff is mix and match Aldi stuff and the odd bargain here and there. - New shoes? Nowt wrong with the cheap Shimanos I have for the T5 or the Mach - New waterproof stuff? Gabba is fine. Stuff for commute doesn't keep me dry but there is a shower and clean clothes at each end. - Proviz jacket? Good for winter commute, but boil in the bag - 105 Upgrade for T5? For near the same money I might as well buy a new bike! - Garmin 520? My 500 seems to work ok still I dunno! What would you lot do?

Is this a trick question? You are seriously asking if you should choose a new pair of shoes or couple clothes instead of a new bike....are you mad man!!!

First off what's the big B'day, Is it the "Hawaii" ? Next you say "You have permission for an extravagant purchase" You don't say who's paying If someone else is paying go for the best bike that YOU WOULD LIKE I can't help you with this, I can't decide what I want for B'days when I'm asked. When is it by the way ?

Yes bandit3 I will morph into 'Jack Lord' and be running around the place saying 'Book him Dano, murder one!' All joint accounts I'm afraid, hence questioning whether I 'need' a new bike robertsims .

Wife hates cycling. Refuses to do it. Refuses to even consider a spin class or sitting on a saddle that isn't the size of an arm chair. Never going to happen.
As for power meter, I'm not sure that I am at the level that warrants one. Never really considered it since the hoo-ha over a certain gentleman who was the same size as me, bought a T5 at the same time then bought a power meter within weeks.

Mate, if you want one (and think you'll use it) then get one, if not then don't! Simple as that! Cycle holiday for week somewhere sunny where wife could spend it on beach?

Ok, you want GF and you know it . So, why not wait a bit and give it a chance. Providing that size and geometry work for you, it might turn out to be the only bike you would ever need. Not sure that Mach would have anything over it, especially if Decca polishes it a bit from the presented prototype. As for joint account, they work on 'first come-first served' bases, so you'd need to put some kind of reservation on it; you know, like the rental agency does when you rent a car

I have a similar problem, but not the Hawaii one yet though.
I might angle towards a gopro rather than anything specifically cycling related. (And also already have a beach holiday booked in July and worked out some bike hire places). Would also like a tour bike, a commuter bike, a folding bike, a electric bike, a better road bike, but probably not worth springing all that on the missus.
Actually, I did mention to her about my plans for my Hawaii one, a trip to Kyrgyzstan, she said she'd never heard of it. I've been briefly looking at various tour companies to Central Asia for years, and leaving various webpages up on display at times for her to discover. Selective memory on her part, I think. Other options being a cycling tour through Myanmar. ... Maybe even a trip to Hawaii, thinking about it now this is probably one she wouldn't dismiss immediately.
