Hi guys This year I have changed my cycling mindset. Last year I cycled 1600 miles (no commuting) which was my highest annual total after a year on year increase but was only a fair weather cyclist. My new years resolution was to not let the weather stop me cycling, only ice and strong winds are a no no. So far I'm managing far more than I usually do at this time of year and with a zwift subscription I am enjoying more turbo time than ever. With a summer trip to mont ventoux and the alps I am working hard to be as fit as I ever have been cycling wise. Having joined a club last year and my kids doing lots of racing I decided to upgrade my licence on renewal to race and have just signed up for my first race. 22 laps of darley moor race circuit in 3 weeks time. It's only a cat 3/4 but I'm expecting to be towards the back of the current 67 strong field. Darley is an old airfield and normally windy and cold. goo.gl/maps/UtFimhLXZcpI'm excited and nervous at the same time and may even do it on my t3 if the weather isn't that dry. Does anyone else race? Do we need a racing thread (non pro).

Enjoy it, Try and just hold the wheels early on. Neutral section will be as frantic as when you leave neutral, be well warmed up before. Don't try to be a hero in your first race, if you have a teammate, maybe try and work for them a bit.
I get a bit nervous in mass start races, especially as the cat 4 can be full of choppers, but do a few - I'm sure I'd get out of 4 fairly quick if I settled to do a few more, but atm, I'm more into the time trialling.

Thanks for the tips. Hopefully I won't be one of the choppers as a new senior cat 4. I have no idea where I will be in terms of pace or stamina with the rest of them. I can ride for hours in the peaks but on a track is different

Joining in with a local chain gang is about as close to racing as you can get without pinning a number on, what club have you joined and do they have one?

That's what I've started this winter and I love it. It's ten laps around a local industrial estate. 9 laps in formation and the 10th is a breakaway lap or sprint for the finish. It's excellent fitness training and the tactics I've seen from other riders on lap 10 have given me an additional appreciation for the pros. Its wetted my appetite for more and certainly improved my bunch riding confidence.

We live 15 miles away so I don't tend to have the time to get for their evening chain gangs this time of year. Summer is better as they start a little later.
