In the summer I managed to pick up one of those £450 Triban 540 in Small. The one with 'mainly 105' components. Its my first ever 'road' bike and I think its great. www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-540-road-bike-105-id_8331275.htmlThrough the winter i've had an old MTB on the turbo trainer, but at some point i'd probably like to get that off there so that i'm training on a road bike (same feel, dimensions etc) and I might even commute on the MTB. So was wondering what could be the best way forward. How much would a 51cm/52cm frameset cost me? Only something like a BTWIN, something that I could attach Shimano stuff to? Doesn't have to be special as my 540 will be my 'best' bike, I'm wondering if I could use this as an excuse to upgrade the non-105 bits on my 540? Chainset and brakes? And use the old stuff from my 540 on the frameset? And buy some cheap sora/claris shifters, derailleurs etc? My 540 has only done a few hundreds miles so far, so the bits have tons of life left in the them. But by the time i've then bought some handlebars and old wheels/tyres, would I have been better off (and cheaper) just picking up a 2nd hand full bike? A T3 or something? And old Boardman? Any thoughts?

Why not just get old rear wheel for £20 and use road bike on turbo with old wheel...or buy second hand as cheap as you can with say 8 speed for turbo and riding when weather rubbish

Thanks for the reply. To be honest, i'm lucky in that fact that I can leave the bike and turbo set up permanently in the workshop. So i'm able to walk in there, fire up the PC and i'm on Trainer Road within minutes. It might be crazy to say, but I don't really want to add time to my workout by having to change wheels and mount the bike etc. Yes, you'll tell me its minutes and I probably agree. For me, the thought of just being able to walk in there and being going in minutes is half the battle of doing the trainer., its like a mental thing Which is why a dedicated turbo road bike appeals so much rather than re-using the 540. Daft eh?

Look at buying an old steel bike for the turbo. If it's nothing special, old etc, then you are not looking at much cost... and weight means nothing on the turbo.

I totally understand as have my TT bike set up on turbo all time and only comes off for races. Agree when doing workout you want minimum fuss possible.

Trouble is my 80's Benotto would be worth a couple of grand if I restored it as it is a rare one with Columbus tubing. Won't be deteriorating any further indoors though

As i'm smitten with my 540 so i'm wondering about sticking with BTWIN and picking up a cheap 2nd hand 51cm T3/500. But my small 540 has 700 wheels and the small T3/500 have 650 wheels.
Aside from the obvious immediate size difference, would I notice anything untoward sticking a small T3 on the turbo?
It does seems that the range of tyres is scarce in 650 and I don't seem to be able to find a 650 trainer tyre?

Progress......... Picked up a T3a off eBay for £80. Gears and brakes need a fettle/adjust, but seem ok. A few dings on the frame, but ok for age. Tyres look like the originals and seem barely worn. It needs new hood rubbers and some new bar tape (both on order for about £12 combined) I've fitted some spare pedals I had. Gonna swap the saddle over and that should be it once hoods/tape is sorted. Its had a bit of a clean today and needs lubing etc. Only downside is that because i'm a short @rse and its a 51cm frame, the wheels on this T3a are 650. (they are 700 on my 52cm T540) So no chance of a 650 trainer tyre and 650 tyres in general scarce compared to 700. But for the money the whole thing cost me, I can't really grumble I suppose?

I wouldn't worry about not having a special trainer tyre - as long as you can find something in 650 that doesn't have silly tread on it you'll be fine.
