Hi all.
I'm thinking about a road bike for 2017.
Nothing beats BTWIN in terms of value for money that I've seen.
I've narrowed it down to these two bikes and I'm wondering if anyone would give their recommendation, hopefully based on ownership of one or both.
I'd be commuting on it and certainly on it at the weekends.
There's £100 between them. I'm wondering if the extra cash is worth it.
Thanks!
Ed.

If you will be wanting fatter tyres, decent mudguards and the ability to carry luggage via a rack then the 540 is your friend.

I am a novice and at my level of interest £450 was a lot to spend but I bought the 540 in the sale at that price. A cracking deal and although the price is now £650 again they have made some upgrades with the crank set (and maybe even the brakes? can't remember exactly). I am extremely happy with my bike. So much so that it left me wondering what I could have got if I had splashed out a bit more and that lead me to ask questions on here about the MACH 720 carbon. Even then it turns out that the Mach is not a complete upgrade of the 540 currently £879 down from £1000. So.....at £650 and with improvements over the version I have (bought in July this year) the saving may be better spent on gear than differences between the bikes. I understand the magic wheels are better for a start. Good luck with choosing and have fun!

I've currently got a Triban 540 (2016) but due to a fault in the frame I am having to (somewhat) reluctantly upgrade to the 700 Ultra AF. This is because the 2016 model has been discontinued and the new 2017 colour scheme of the 540 is really not to my taste, forcing me to upgrade.
I don't use mudguards, and will probably never use panniers, but I like the option of being able to, which is not an option on the 700. The advantages of the 700 Ultra from what I see are a half kilo lighter frame with internal cable routing, and frame mounted brakes which have more stopping force. Other than that they are both the same bike, albeit with a slightly different geometry, as the 700 Ultra is more aggressive and sportive. The colour of the 700 Ultra is still not to my liking however, which is a niggling annoyance.
