Is there enough difference between these 2 bikes to feel a marked upgrade and thus subject the 540 to a label of a winter hack? In a nutshell, I have no reason to do such a thing but after browsing the store today the Mach 720 CF just looked so appealing. I can't really afford it either but if it made sense in the long run perhaps I would give myself a christmas treat. So full carbon frame = weight saving and feel good factor. full 105 group set = no corners cut where as my 540 was made affordable by mixing the group up a bit. I doubt I'd really notice. Wheels = B-Twin. Mavic Askium on the 540 which are better? There doesn't seem much in it and it would be a pure self indulgent treat. Should I wait for more pennies and more choice? And does it not take 25mm tyres?

Other than frame, I don't see those bikes any different. 540 has better wheels. Neither is full group set - based on pictures, Mach shares brakes with T-500. Mach is still heavier than my, sub 1K, also carbon, hydro disks bike, so I'd say you could do better for the money.

I'll do the best I can here:
- Aero wheels are a Mavik Aksium copy. Good but possibly not quite as good as the Mavics (I have both and like both) - 105 groupset is a mix and match on the Mach. Mine didnt have 105 brake calipers nor a 105 chainset. - Frame looks nice in my eyes, although some think it ugly - Weight isn't low for a carbon bike. It is compared with my T5. Think the Ultra 720AF is lighter isn't it? - I have 25mm Lithions on my Mach. - Would I upgrade from 540 to Mach - I do like the Mach but probably not.

Thanks for your replies guys. Apart from thinking it was a complete 105 groups, I suspected there wouldn't be great differences. Shame, its a nice looking bike and I guess I could of switched my magic aksiums over onto it which would have sorted that one out but clearly still not enough to make a big step up.
Never mind, my hunger has subsided.
