Not the best of summers but the mild autumn did enable many of us to get the miles in. Even up to last night/this afternoon we had decent cycling weather if somewhat colder. The temperature took a definite drop after sunset and now I'm looking out onto the frost covered rooves of the cars.
Definitely looking like the first hint of winter may be here.
I imagine you lucky southerners will have a little more time but for me, the winter gear will be getting an airing very, very soon.
To quote Hill Street Blues.......... "Lets be careful out there!"

Definitely getting cool this evening in the south, I was out this evening till about 2100 and it was quite cool. Where are you based in the freezing north?

Freezing in the south this morning, first frost of the autumn. Decathlon ski base layer and long-sleeved jersey was just about right, but suffered cold fingers and toes today. Not quite ready for the Aldi winter jacket yet so considering an in-between purchase for when a jersey doesn't quite cut it anymore.
It's been a superb autumn, will be sad to see the back of it.

Forecast for the next fortnight not looking good here, snow expected overnight so I think I will be stuck in on the turbo for the foreseeable future.

Find one of the joys of cycling is enjoying the change of seasons. Very much enjoying the changing colours on the trees and the moors and the pleasant chill in the air. I totally agree,i went out last weekend and done 64 miles on a route i did in august and it was great to be riding over crispy leaves and under bright yellow and red leaves still on the trees.I really enjoy riding in the summer, short sleeves, bib shorts but also like wrapping up in warm thermal long sleeve jersey, long fingered gloves and overshoes.

Be careful out there... the rain will wash any salt away to be followed by freezing and snow. will be icy

Hi everyone! I think I'm well supplied for winter with thermal jersey and tights, under helmet hat and glove liners, but what to wear on my feet? I've not moved to clipless pedals and am in no hurry to. I normally ride in Canvas Vans trainers. They are cold and tend to flex a bit on the pedals and being canvas offer next to no protection from rain.
I was thinking of getting some cheap hiking shoes for riding in winter as they are waterproof, have a stiff sole and will provide decent grip on the pedal? Is this a daft idea?
I'm open to all other ideas! Well those that don't involve spending too much cash!

Well those that don't involve spending too much cash! riding in winter means your feet will be cold. i wear 2 thick pairs of merino socks, overshoes with a small binliner underneath for the wet, and long flaps on front mudguards. on anything longer than an hour my feet are cold. riding in winter means frozen feet - apply rules 5 and 9. forget it and enjoy the ride.

I used to use some old work safety boots in very cold weather, they had a steel midsole to protect from nails so were very stiff. I even considered trying to convert them to take cleats as it was so nice to have warm(er) feet. Cheaper than equivalent hiking boots as no VAT but obviously a weight penalty.
