Got some birthday money (about £50) burning a hole in my pocket and looking at investing in a descent windproof top. Already got an Aldi Jacket one last year but its a bit 'too warm' at times and not ventilated enough resulting in my getting cold as soon as i stop as im wet through with sweating. Not that fussed about being waterproofed as i don't tend to ride if wet weather is forecast but frosty cold mornings are where i need the protection. It might seem warm if the suns out but once moving and the wind hits!! Got all the baselayers etc already so im thinking Jersey is the better option. Any recommendations?

On a similar theme I have this...... www.decathlon.co.uk/500-warm-cycling-jacket-black-orange-id_8369395.htmlI don't think Windproof is its main claim to fame but it does say it is windproof as a function (under the warmth heading). I'm just not sure how it would deal with things if you stop full of sweat again? If your base layers are wicking the swat away it is unlikely you'll want a layer in between which leaves this layer. It is breathable to a degree but you'd probably want to un zip it a bit and then you'd get a bit colder that way. I have worn it once so far and it was great but for stopping and hanging around outside it may not be much better.

I recently bought one of these for riding in cooler condtions and am pleased with it. www.wiggle.co.uk/altura-peloton-long-sleeve-jersey/When they say sport fit, they mean it. If you are on the cusp of a size, go for the larger one. For really cold weather I have a Castelli Mortirolo jacket. It was more than warm enough last winter with one thermal under layer.

At first (a couple of years ago) I bought one of these black Aldi tops (new) from Ebay and am using it in the transition from Summer to Autumn (10-15 degs). Good windstopper for current temps. Little to no water resistance so need a waterproof jacket when it rains: Last year I bought one of these Aldi tops. I use it in the colder and damp/misty/drizzly conditions (5-10 degs). It looks much better than in this picture though: The year before I bought another Aldi jacket, which I can only wear when its really cold and I have to be careful with baselayers because moisture gets trapped in it. Its ok as long as I don't stop, but if I do, I get very cold very quickly! So this one is now for short rides on really cold days (>0-5 degs) or cold commutes when the moisture build up isn't so bad: Finally, for best in the winter I have a Gabba 2. Great in the cold and the wet. Have only once had to put a wind breaker over the top of it when cold (Cotswold Spring Classic which started with flakes of snow and a negative degree win chill): I spent a total of less than £50 on the first 3 jackets. The Gabba was on offer for about £80-90 at the time I think.

I have the 3rd of your jaldi jackets too... and I agree, it's mighty warm and not breathable... I ended up unzipping it on a velodrome last winter.... when it was -6C! which to be fair helped a lot. I have a previous incarnation of the decca 700 aerofit one richardw bought... and it's just brilliant, I genuinely can't imagine what the gabba could do better when it's 0-10C tbh - and 10-15C I'm happy with just a roubaix fleece jersey.

Just bought Evans FWE king of the downs www.evanscycles.com/fwe-king-of-the-downs-softshell-jacket-EV275962Been using it for 2 weeks and very warm so far. Me too. I got last year's version for £40. Very warm, well fitting and would have happily paid the full price for it. My one gripe is that the pockets on my version are really small, aside from that perfect and has kept me warm on my first decent length runs.

Middle one is narrower but you can get phone/keys in there.

Glad to hear they've sorted it out. Sorely tempted by the orange version!
