Hi Chas, Thanks for such a great info. I'm currently looking for a gravel/adventure bike and i was eagerly waiting for btwin to announce one in the coming months, since it's so fashion right now. Do you think they'll release a triban with disk brakes, slightly more relaxed geometry, and good clearance (35mm seems really cool, is that with or without mudguards?) ?. Right now i'm on the bridge of purchasing a 520 and replace with bigger tires or wait for new models from btwin. Believe there may well be a disc option but it's currently being road tested to decide for certain.

Is that shifter mounted on the bar top? Yes the same as was on the jnr triban, this is an entry level commuter not a proper gravel bike. Just showing it can take a bit of hammer.

When I asked the question I was told its not likely before Spring 2018 and around the Ultra 720 price point. Testing has been done on a disc brake version but its not ready for market yet.

Engage brains TOC / BTOC / BOC ... ... any time-related design program is subject to those who might deliver your dreams aiming to manage client aspirations in the first instance by laying down a worse case scenario (usually done to appease some time and motion PM arse ) ... then the real game is aiming to deliver ahead of schedule with something of substance ...

Thanks for the answers guys, really appreciated.
Given that, i think i'm going to opt for the triban 520. The triple chainring and the amount of clearance makes it really good for my needs as a beginner.
Cheers!

Is this not unusual or could the range be being refreshed? Is this perhaps not a good time to be buying? It is simultaneously an excellent and terrible time to buy a bike! If you want something specific, its a terrible time. If you want something to fit a bill but have various options, it'll be cheap - there are bargains out there. Problem is, next season's bikes will be out before Christmas, so everyone is clearing their old stock. I wish the flat bar 540 had the Mavic Aksium wheels of the regular 540 but a member of staff at the new Decathlon in Crawley told me there won't be any changes in the near future. There still doesn't seem to be any real competition for the 540 so, trusting that what I was told is true (unfortunately I've since discovered that some of the things he told me about the bike itself were incorrect), I've decided to take the plunge and have placed an order online.

I've generally been advised to avoid triple chainsets and go with the simplicity of a double but then I'm only going to be on the roads and you may have different requirements for your 'gravel/adventure bike'.
