Hi all, I bought a second hand Triban 3 (white) on Friday evening after scratching an itch in terms of getting a road bike. I took it for a quick spin on a private road on Saturday morning to get a feel for it and then, having bought a hemlet & multi-tool yesterday I went for a 7 mile ride last night. I need to gradually get some kit such as bib shorts etc but for now will enjoy casual rides (7-10 miles) in rural Oxon whilst I get used to it. The owner suggested I get new tyres for winter as it currently has Michelin's which are slicks and there's also some sign of wear & tear on them (small patches of cracks appearing). What tyre size is suitable? It's a 54CM frame so I'm guessing 700x23 or x25? Also, any suggestions on what tyre? I don't want to spend more than Β£50ish in total and my main aim will be something safe/robust whilst I get used to road cycling.

Welcome Godders, Don't fall for the tread error, if you are riding on a road, tread makes you slower and reduces your grip, anyone thinking differently needs to be pumping their tyres up or attempting records, you won't be needing a team to win the tour if you are going fast enough to aquaplane on a correctly inflated road tyre, you'll be doing well over 100mph! As for what's suitable, if you intend to run mudguards (which I'd suggest for winter use) then you'll have to stick to 23 mm tyres... if not, 25s are ok, more comfortable, better grip and less rolling resistance than 23s. For a sturdy high mileage winter tyre, look at schwalbe durano/durano plus, should be well within your budget, they are a nice compromise and have really very good wet grip for a tyre thats pretty well protected from the evil fairy.

Welcome Godders, from the photo your T3 looks to be in good nick. I'm sure you'll pick up (like me) many handy tips on all aspects of cycling. Please remember; it's ok to be strange but don't be a stranger
