Hi everyone, not yet a Triban owner, but hopefully in the few days.Been a fan of Decathlon's stuff for a while, and my missus and daughter both have B'Twins and we've been really impressed with both the qaulity and service. I've been holding out on buying a road bike since the start of the summer, and I've finally decided on a Triban 500SE after reading all the good reviews both here and elsewhere. I had been going to order on line but I'm not sure about sizes. Height wise, I'm 5'8", but with an inside leg measurement of 32" and longish arms, so although the size guide says 54cm frame, I'm wondering if 57cm might be better? Might head to Decathlon at the weekend and try them both out.
Excellent forum, by the way, loads of good info.

Agree with Rocket but you could try both to make sure. I am 5'10'' with longer leg, also high AE (arm length), ride a 54 Triban and 53 FC700. But you may be an exception. Careful though, going up may be more Audax than Sportive in use but you'll probably need a shorter stem if going larger. We have seen people having to go back for a smaller size after a week or two, who went up a size when in your position, whereas I struggle to recall anyone ever trading up because they went too small. IMO the Decathlon charts err towards 'up a size' bias, 'French / Belgium / Merckx' fit is a style of fit that's characterised by less bar drop, rather than more recent 'race' fit. If you compare say a picture of Cavendish to Merckx, you'll get the gist. Welcome .

Another point of reference: I'm 5'10", also 32" inside leg and have a 57cm Triban 5a (not too different from the 500SE). I feel I'm just barely big enough for this size, and might have been more comfortable with a 54cm.

I'm 5'7 and 31.5" inside leg and if anything, my 54 is a fraction too big - other bikes are 53s (which don't exist in BTwins).

Good advice everyone, thank you. The last thing I want to do is have to change it in a few weeks time.

Well went to Decathlon on Sunday and I tried a couple for size, and came away with the 54cm bike. I've been out for a couple of rides during the week. The first one felt a bit strange, as this is the first road bike I've ridden and quite a bit different from the 14 year old Raleigh Firefly mtb that I've been using!! I've made a few tweeks to the saddle and handle bars and headed out this morning and it has improved it a lot. Very happy with the bike, gears shift very well and the brakes are spot on(brake pads are now the cartridge type rather than the moulded blocks).

Great to hear you are having fun. Likewise I have tweaked and tweaked my saddle and I bought a shorter stem (having opted for the larger frame of 2 sizes that I was smack in the middle of). It's never been far off but I'm surprised how many tweaks it can take to dial right in. In fact just made what I believe to be the perfect position.

I feel I'm just barely big enough for this size, and might have been more comfortable with a 54cm. I too am 5'10" and 32 inside leg and have a triban 500, the previous version to the current one, basically the same frame as the 500se. Anyway I was persuaded in the shop to get the 57 and always had a feeling I may have been better off with the 54. Ten days ago I bought a carbon bike in a 56 frame and this is perfect, amazing how that small size difference can make you feel much better. Anyway the only way to really find out is to ride both.
