He's probably growing quite quickly right? so if he can physically manage the 51" frame it will do him until he reaches 5'6"

decathlon reckon a 48cm is good for him and will allow growth to 5'3 or if he can squeeze on a 51cm then a bit more growing room.Shame they only have the 48cm left and no 51cm

Hmmmm, Odd that they recommend the one they have? Though Perhaps I'm being a little unfair there as it is whats recommended for his size but if he was fully grown that would be much easier to accept. Now I don't know what others think? But backing up my own experience, I have relatively short arms at 5'8" so should by rights have been a Medium frame on my 540 according to the guidance. I'm actually a better fit on a Large frame and a shorter handle bar stem having watched many a 'pro fit' video. Perhaps you could watch a few and study the angles/body positions and return to the store and get them to adjust the 48cm version to get the right fit. Then you'll get a better idea.

Got my lad a 45 a few weeks before he was 11 years old, he'll be 14 soon and is circa 5'3'' ... he's still on it, although these days the fit is a tad 'Cavendish' compared to the early days, it's fine, even with shortened stem, actually spot on for race fit and he did several hours in the saddle yesterday with no worries . Whilst a new bike will be imminent some point in the near future, surprisingly, it's not urgent - there's a lot of range in each size, depends on the extent that you want the fit to be racy or relaxed. See below, some pictures from yesterday, check out the mini-racer v touring position, different bikes entirely of course, but you'll get my gist. I'm supposed to be two sizes up from my 53 FC700 and 1 size up from my 54 T3 - we obviously like a sporty fit in this house.
