I'm not thinking about getting one, but asking for a friend But really, what is the point of a Fat Bike? It would appear that it is for more gnarly terrain than a MTB would handle, maybe cycling along beaches, etc. But I have seen people ride them in Kingston-Upon-Thames far far away from any worthy terrain. Do people just think they are actually Phat Bikes?

A good friend of mine from the MTB club I'm a member of is massively into fat bikes. He lives by the coast so does a lot of beach riding, I've tried using my 29'er on a beach with him. Its ok on the compacted stuff but anything soft and you are off the bike pushing. The fat bikes are great for that. He'll even head over to places in Holland to do some beach racing and they hold some over here aswell. The Welsh coast seems a popular destination. He's very keen to tell everyone he's a 'brand ambassador' for Travers a Bikes and his stuff is quite high end, lauf forks and so on. They don't look cheap! If your 'friend' wants to have a look this guy runs a blog, here's a link if you fancy a look johnclimber.com

Do people just think they are actually Phat Bikes? I suspect you nailed it.

Fat bikes are for fat people hence the name. Going on the principle of force=pressure/area then their massive tyres ensure no pinch punchers.

Easy, I know a duathlete who used one on a muddy / boggy trail stage and passed a fair few folk who sniggered at the start (well over six foot, mid 70 kilos ).

Not sure where, just recounting exactly what he said to me when I said that I'd probably only try a FatBike on snow but couldn't see the point otherwise - still stand by that view, as won't be sourcing one personally but if it's someone's thing, then who cares, and I'd have a play on one, if lent or hired in the right setting (on holiday perhaps); horses for courses, if they only just invented BMX now, then I probably wouldn't want one, at least not as much as in years gone by but there was a time when it's all I was into - if offered a nice one now, then I'd take it and go and see if I could break my old @rse at the skatepark .
