Well, I say £1500 to spend, that's what I've decided but I haven't ran it past 'the boss' yet. I don't know whether to sneak it in or risk another 'ta-daaaaaaa' moment. About me as a rider, I'm a plodder who wants to get faster, I don't ever see me racing or touring. I do want to join a club and better myself so maybe want something that'll be worth upgrading in the future. So, after a quick scope around I've seen two that I like :- Dolan L'etape £1499 www.dolan-bikes.com/road/road-bikes/dolan-l-etape-carbon-road-bike-shimano-ultegra-6802.htmlCannondale Synapse Carbon 105 £1599 www.formbycycles.co.uk/cannondale-synapse-carbon-105-5-road-bike-2016.htmlDolan is ok for me as their base is only 10 miles away so it wouldn't be a distance sale. From what I can see, the Dolan is better species. Ultegra over 105? Is that right? I can't quite fathom out why it's £100 cheaper than the Cannondale, both review brilliantly and should be available to test locally. As a lot of you guys are more 'in the know' than I'll ever be is there other bikes out there within budget that I've blatantly missed? Is one of the above substantially a better buy than the other? Any input or opinions would be much appreciated. thanks all, Steve

Helluva lot of great bikes for that money. You will certainly get Ultegra in that price range.
Think first about what you of riding you are going to be doing. Fast club rides or all day sportives? Work that out first then start looking around for something you like the look of aesthetically. Then work from there.

My biggy for the year is a work sponsored Children In Need 3 day 300 miles ride. That Cannondale although it could be an acquired taste I really like the look of it. Not being a big techie I'm not up with the group sets too much, is Ultegra a big upgrade on 105? Can of worms?

To put in a different perspective...For a 3 day tour, why not get a tour type bike? www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b0s21p2866for that money you could even get Ti www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b0s21p2868Im guessing you fancy something sportier - maybe look at canyon. despite recent supply issues, i understand they good value: www.canyon.com/en-gb/road/endurace/

Save yourself £500 and buy a Mach.
You might be able to save more than that as there might be the odd old version in your size knocking around (as I think I remember you being quite tall).

I haven't ridden Ultegra myself by the consensus is that Ultegra offers a little bit more refinement over 105 as well as a bit of a weight saving. In reality there shouldn't be too much difference. Trading Ultegra for 105 might allow you a bike with nicer wheels. Like I say though there's a lot of choice out there.

Given the potential for upgrade later getting mentioned, I wonder if there should be any focus on 105 vs Ultegra, 105 far far better than just acceptable, not used ultegra for more than an hour, so don't know how much better it is - but from all I know, we mortals don't really upgrade from ultegra, so most of the potential upgrades will have already happened. I think @germcevoy had it down, find one you fall in love with - one that will make you ride it more.

As above, but have you seen the current Mach in the flesh? the new frame colour looks really classy and you could get some nice wheels with the difference... (nothing wrong with the aero 20/24s though)

Thanks guys, yes Paulinblack I am tall, 6'4" so it might come in handy for a bargain. Whilst my wife is out with her mum for Mothers Day I'm looking after the twins. Not ideal bike shopping conditions but I do need a few bits from Decathlon. I'll try and have a little look at the Mach which won't be easy with two five year olds in tow but I'll give it a go . I'll probably end up looking more at the kids bikes n' scooters instead.

And ringing every single bell/horn in the store.

I would also check out Paul Cycles if you don't mind a 2014 or 2015 model of the big brands

I'd give more thought to your riding style before jumping into anything. The Mach has quite agressive geometry with a short head tube. I would definitely recommend it if you want to ride hard and fast. I'd have bought it myself if there were any in stock when I was ready to buy. I went for a Supersix Evo instead. Again quite a race orientated geometry but Cannondale also have the Synapse in their range with a more laid back geometry better suited to long days in the saddle.
I can recommend Pauls Cycles. Looking at 2015 models with big discounts is wise as new bikes are all running the same groupsets. You will be paying a premium for 2016 models that may well be the same bar a paint job.
