Anyone on here upgraded the standard Triban (500, 500se, 3 or 3a) one for any others (Clarks etc)? Do they offer better braking performance than the standard ones?

This is a very subjective topic. Just try some others when yours wear out. I went with Shimano R55C3. Can't say they made much difference in wet or dry conditions. Replacing your braking cables (outer and inner) will make much more difference if you have put a lot of use on them especially if they have never been lubricated.

found clarks ones worse than rubbish - grit gets stuck in the little holes and wrecks rims. I rec disco brakes. cheap and effective. but yeah - as rocket said - new cables, and outers well lubed, and well adjusted pads make more difference. speaking of which I should replace my rear cable.

I have a 500 with Sora brakes originally, I didn't like the brakes and after doing a little research it seems Sora have a bad reputation. I changed to dura ace cartridge pads and saw an immediate improvement.

I'm going to try to change the cables, but tbh, the brakes were poor from new. I've swaped to Disco brake pads, but they didnt improve matters. I remember when I first came on the forum, I saw someone change the Btwin equiv Sora brake calipers for 105s. I didn't understand why at the time, but I might do the same myself if it will improve things.

I swapped the Sora callipers over to Tiagra mainly due to something on the rear braking (or something like that). Found these to be better than the Sora, currently using Disco blocks and these have been great (also used them in the Sora too).
There's another thread knocking about on Brake Pads, in there i mention Clarks being very poor.

Here is a review of the Sora groupset. www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/reviews/group-sets-chains-cranks-etc/shimano-sora-everything-need-knowMy advice would be change the brake blocks first, and see how you get on, it worked for me.

Do the R55C3 Shimano pads directly replace the original 500se ones. I will need to replace mine soon and from your advice, seem to be the ones to buy. Thank you.

Did you guys with the T5A have Sora callipers? I'm sure mine came with Tektro callipers, Sora everything else. I definitely noticed a difference when upgrading to 105, and I had tried different brake pads before the upgrade but hadn't noticed much difference. The improvement may have been from new brake cables, as Rocket suggested, but either way my confidence in travelling at speed jumped dramatically after the upgrade.

I agree with you: switched from the original Tektro to a pair of new Shimano 105 Dual Pivot, and brake performances are on another level!

On my T5A I have Btwin copies of Sora callipers. I guess that they are manufactured by Tektro and re-branded by B-Twin, may be the R-312 model.

Sorry for the delay in replying. My brakes are marked BTwin so not sure if they're the same as the Sora. Sorry.
