If I have 50*34 front and 12*30 rear do I need 114 or 116 link chain? If its needed my T3 is a 57. Thanks

I used Sram 850 on similar gearing most of the time on my T3 just checked spare 114 links. Think I usually have to remove a couple, line new one up with old chain prior to instillation is always best best.

You need to dummy fit it. Chain length not only depends on your chainrings and cassette but also the distance between them and the cage of your rear dérailleur. Knock it up in small/small and make sure the chain is short enough to have tension. This will give you the longest chain you can run so that in big/big your rear dérailleur will have an easier time. If like me you swap cassettes then dummy fit it with your smallest cog that way it will work with any others. Novel idea..... Cut it the same length as the one you take off if that has been working correctly

I cant make it the same as the one I took off as that was an 8 speed triple I'm going to 10 speed double.. I've ordered a 116 I guess I'll try a dummy fit and see how it goes.

I was always told to wrap it round big/big without running through the mech then overlap by two links.

Yes the chain ordered is 10 speed but there was 2 options 114 or 116 I've gone for the 116 so I can remove links if needed.

A quick hijack. I'm running a compact with a 12-27 cassette. Long cage derailleur. Could I go to a 11-30 cassette occasionally for a hilly sportive from time to time without adjusting chain length?

Ger put it in small/small and see how much tension the rear dérailleur has. If you think it could take up an extra tooth without the chain becoming slack then you should be OK. Then try big/big and look if the dérailleur is maxed out forwards. Then dummy up shortening the chain by 3 teeth. If the dérailleur is not looking maxed out then you are good to go. Having a long cage version should be OK as long as the chain fitted was correctly sized. Worst case is you maintain 2 different chain lengths like I do.

As long as stay away from Big/Big then should be totally fine, however if accidentally go into Big/Big then...could potentially damage rear derailleur
