Hi,
I'm going to san sebatien in septemeber and thought it might be nice to hire a bike and do a ride.
anyone got any advice as to where to go? they do the san sebatien classic there, but I know little about it.
Are there any 'must do' routes?
cheers

So, I did a little cycling in the basque country. We were staying in San Sebastian and I needed to work off some pintxos so I hired a bike from a brilliant place: kili.bike/ .They also do tours of the local country, but I wanted one to go up the nearest big hill Jaizkibel. Got an Orbea with ultegra Di2 gears – interesting as I’d never used them before. The big ring shift is satisfying and very accurate, however the rear derailleur was similar to a non-electronic shifter. The overall package didn’t make me think I should spend c.£2k on an electronic system! Anyway, the bike was great and cost me 60 euros to hire for the day. I cycled down the seafront and with a bit of local knowledge gleaned from the bike shop, took a small boat over a river to avoid the big traffic roads. The climb itself was lovely, hardly any cars, along the sea, little bit of light rain kept the temperature down and it was a constant gradient to the top, which took around an hour. It’s part of the San Sebastian classic and I think they do it a few times during the race. Whizzed back down and tucked into some more pintxos as a reward. Wish I could have had longer to explore the coastline, but my better half was waiting for me.

Nice. I did this route in a hire car last summer and remember thinking "I wouldn't fancy this on a bike". I love the Basque country.
