I was given a couple months back a classic holdsworth like this one but not nearly as restored www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=327916 Ive done a lot of the resto myself now and got it going again but am finding going back to the old downtube shifters really hard now I'm used to STI. Its a nice frame, part of me says to spread the rear triangle and fit the complete running gear from a T3a or likewise. any thoughts ?

Up until a couple of years ago I ran my 3 older bikes as standard. They still had and have their down tube friction shifters plus 27x11/4 tyers.
Today 2 of them have had rear dropouts spread to accommodate wheels that came from my T3 and Mach when I upgraded to Mavics. They're also fitted with 8 speed cassettes and the quick release is another added bonus of not lugging around a shifter!
Mine are still taken out fairly regularly and yes it's strange when your hands get confused as to where the shifters are but I can put up with that, as I love the feel of steel!
It's your bike and you can do as you feel fit with the bits and bobs. You can always put it back as is at some later date. Enjoy.

I put the T3 drive train on my Falcon... not quite the same as a retro bike, but it's not that cool to be worth it. So, depends if you want a handy winter bike etc, or a cool retro bike.
