Hi, I'm now in the process of buying my first road bike and wanted expert opinions on deciding between the 500 & 500se. I notice the se has carbon forks does that make a big difference? I'm mainly a long distance runner and to start with will be using the bike to commute and extra cardio work on off days. But do have the feeling once I start the cycling bug could get me big time so wanted to make sure I had a bike that could cope with longer rides. Thanks

I blieve both the 500 and the 500SE have a carbon fork. I'm an ex 500 SE owner, as far as I can recall the difference between the 500 & the 500 SE is the 500 comes with a Sora 9-speed transmission and the SE with 8-speed microshift drivetrain.

Looks like their is only Β£20 between them nowadays, so I'd be going with the 9 speed Sora 500

I really wanted the Sora equipped 500 but there are none left, I rang Decathlon and was advised there wouldn't be any available in my size and all they had left were small ones. I settled for the SE and am happy with it, the microshift system is a bit agricultural but it does the job and it seems well made. Happy days.

Thanks The main benefit of carbon forks is improved comfort over the steel forks of the 500 (the above posts refer to last years 500), you also get a better chainset and I think worth paying the extra if you're doing more than short commutes. Several on here have upgraded the old 300 (eq to current 500) with carbon forks and said what a difference it makes.
