I am picking up an old racing bike from Freegle tomorrow evening with the plan of converting it into a single speed bike for when I am up in London/going on cycle paths near home.
Anyone tried anything similar? Not sure what make/size/condition yet but could be a fun project hopefully.
Will post some pics once I've picked it up.
Any tips/pointers greatly received.

M I'd like very mutch to do a project like this! Two friends of mine have done, and sometimes they lend it to me, not an expert but my $0.2 : > use the flip-flop hub on rear wheel cose the fixy is a big part of the fun, but sometimes... > make it very stilish (leather saddle and tape, one little brake, chrome carved handlebar, etc.) but not funk (gold chain, red tyres, crazy bullhorn...) for some inspiration: www.fixedgeargallery.com> strap pedals are a must for fixy use > if possible, a size down it's bette IMHO :-)

Not sure I'm brave enough for fixie. Was thinking more single speed/freewheel option and using the existing hub.

Was thinking more single speed/freewheel option and using the existing hub. just a suggestion, fixie side is really funny, you won't regret, even if you just use it in rare times at the park (at the beginning), also a big training for the legs and for the right round movement, in the past many "pro" or "serious riders" begin the season on a fixie, ...flip-flop free-fixed costs about 15-20 GBP

Just picked bike up. Can't upload pics at the moment as my photo bucket account isn't working. Not sure what make as yet as all labels have been taken. It's a 1970's racing green 10 speed racer. Needs a bit of TLC but looks in quite good nick for a bike of that age. Bit of rust and chips here and there.

Gotta love suicide levers. Yeah think the plan is to replace those with something like you get on cyclocross bikes. Trying to keep cost to a minimum though so may well try and raid Freegle for parts. I really like the colour, racing green, so will keep that am thinking brown leather bar tape and seat.

nice! ..and very old (it use clamps for cables instead of frame pins, so I think about before '75 ?).
IMHO you have two main choices: >leave everything in place and just put single speed transmission, doing a "conservative restoration" >transform it in a single speed beast (no mudgards, special pedals, one little brake, chrome handlebar)
IMVHO avoid "the middle way", 'cose she'd lose her soul.

I might have some spares lying around I could sell on.
