I picked this up on Saturday, a 1985 Raleigh Competition, 531 frame and forks, Suntour Cyclone II group, Mavic wheels, Weinmann brakes. It needs a load of work, not least a respray to get rid of the horrific custom job the original owner did. It is also geared for mentalists - 52/42 up front and 13/21 at the back. This is what it should look like.. www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=267608

Love it!
Before I decided I wanted a road bike of my own, I borrowed my brothers' 1983 (we think) Raleigh Quasar. It was a total bucket of rust and the gearing was rubbish - needed replacing. Nevertheless, I wouldn't mind doing one up one day as a little project. Hope you enjoy your project! I look forward to seeing pics of your progress!

The challenge so far is to assemble the tools and techniques to strip the frame down. Got a pin spanner coming tomorrow for the BB, and will attempt the headset over the weekend - then measure the headset to find the stack height. Luckily it's a fairly common bike so there's quite a lot of info online, however with each revision of the Competition the components change dramatically!

After waiting several weeks for the frame to be shot blasted and resprayed, I picked it up on Saturday morning and spent the rest of the weekend assembling the new and refurbished parts. It's had new chainrings, freewheel, chain, BB, tyres, cables and outers, lever hoods and head badge, and I've added a saddle off my 80s car boot bike and toe clip pedals I've had since the 80s! And all the alloy had been polished with increasing grades of wet and dry and a finally with Durasol Shine. Just got the decals and bar tape waiting to go on, but as my hands were filthy last night, and with supper and a cold beer waiting, I stopped at this point.

looks great. in the summer in Bakewell there is a retro cycling festival eroicabritannia.co.uk/friend of mine trying to get me to go with him on his restored tandem. You would look great rolling around on your beautiful machine. (tho maybe a bit hilly for those crazy gears!) you've worked hard there - deserving of that beer. have fun on it!

One of the reasons for getting this up together erictherat is for the Eroica and got my entry in last month. I've got another bike that qualifies, but it's a pig iron supermarket 80s racer that's not really deserving of my time. A mate is coming with me on his vintage Ciocc and he's got exactly the same gearing so we'll be walking up the hills together!

Brilliant work Jim. Looks fantastic. Thought you were in the Eroica. Enjoy that!
I've got a late 1980s Raleigh Equipe in the shed with the original colour scheme (mint and white with purple and yellow trim would you believe) which was my first proper road bike. Going to hang on to that for old times sake I think.

Thanks everyone! We're doing the 50 mile route, the 100 mile is out of my league on this bike! The replacement freewheel does have three extra teeth on it over the stock, but that's not going to help that much! It's not the best picture, but here's the bike with decals and tape - the tape looks a bit modern, but it will be comfortable!

Did you purchase transfers to restore the branding after the frame treatment Jim?

Thanks @robert. Yes ChrisD, managed to get the complete set of Raleigh and Reynolds decals - they're not cheap, were about Β£15 per set but they look the part. This is a better picture in the daylight.
