So I wore through my ProWheel chainrings after about 3000 miles and decided to give the drivetrain an overhaul on my Triban 3.
As it's my commuting bike, I saw no need to do a major upgrade so settled on the Claris triple chainset - the replacement to the 2300 series triple which has an octalink BB rather than a square tapered BB.
I did some research and found a couple of responses in forums that recommended 68x121mm octalink BB to replace the 68x115 square tapered BB that was there before.
but now I've installed it, it feels like it's too wide for the front derailleur and I should have gone for the 118mm.
Has anyone had any experience upgrading to an octalink bottom bracket on their triban and which spindle length worked for them?

The bottom bracket length should match the chainset, the frame should be a standard offset chainline. I've got old double and triple 105 octalink chainsets, the double is 109mm, the triple 118mm but the Claris may be different. I'll try and find out what length is fitted to the 500se

I've looked for the spare part for the 500se but it's not shown. According to the Shimano tech docs it should be 121mm. When you say it feels too wide for the front mech do you mean you can't get the big ring, does it just need slight adjustment of the cable and stops?

Thanks for getting back and checking the 500SE parts.
I saw the shimano tech doc too, and figured that the Triban 3 frame would be not be particularly different to standard specs which is why I ordered that bottom bracket
I've ridden around on it for a while and I can get to the big ring just fine. I did do a big set of adjustments to the front derailleur and it feels like the front mech is stretched as far as it will go to catch the big ring, and even then there is a slight rub on the smallest sprocket on the back. Maybe it's just to my eyes it looks like the chainline is a little stretched - although I could just be seeing things.
According to articles I've read, the middle chainring should line up with the centre of the cassette - gear 4/5 on my bike. However, it looks like it's perfectly straight when it's on the 3rd smallest cog rather than the 4th. I figured that was because the crankset was too far out from the frame because of the bottom bracket size being 121mm rather than 118mm.

You're probably right that a 118 would work better on a Triban frame, whether it's worth changing is another matter. I struggle with the opposite problem with other frames, I can't always reliably get the granny ring even with the front mech hitting the frame, the Tribans have a useful indent to solve this. It seems the bottom bracket length is a bit of a compromise.

For anyone in the future who might be searching the internet for advice on this. The 118mm spindle length is the bottom bracket you need for the Claris Chainset.
I took mine to the bikeshop with the 121mm after not being satisfied and he advised that I change it as it would improve the life of the drive train. I wasn't satisfied with the 121mm that others had suggested so went for the 118 one and it's the perfect fit. Did 80 miles today and it feels like a brand new bike again!
