I'm thinking of buying an airline suitable bike box so I don't get withdrawal symptoms at work. There is a BW box for £189 on wiggle which looks ok. Anybody got any recommendations or cautionary tales to tell?

I was reading up on them the other day - definitely need a sturdy box style one for flights, rather than the bag type. The only downside I could see was that it appears to add in potential for getting stung by some airlines but can't see there's a lot of alternatives with that issue except shopping around to find the cheapest.

Thanks Rads. I think you are right about box rather than a bag. its going to get plenty of use so although some bags are pretty good there is bound to be a disaster eventually. Some airlines do charge quite a bit extra but I should be able to avoid any extra charges as work will pay.

Well there we go - not so bad then; apparently the demand isn't all that high, whereas they're used to skis and golf clubs. Would be great to take your bike if out and about with work - I used to like going for a run when working away, as you get a feel for the place and you're kicking your heels out of hours in hotels etc ... wasn't into cycling then, opportunity lost.

Yep - carpe diem and all that. Just been recommended another box by a work colleague - velo vault. £449 but apparently it's the dogs... I hate dealing with price bands like that...

Book another flight for the difference - it's only a suitcase.

Ultix SAS bike bag www.ultixoutdoors.com/I know its not a solid case but I think the perfect balance between soft case and hard case and I would hazard a guess offers more stability for the bike with the forks locked in place. Can be had for as little as £150 if you shop around.

Hire one... www.bikebox-online.co.ukI'm sure other websites are available (quick search) or indeed, local club member or bike shop would hire you one.

As ianmoss suggested hiring is a good idea, most now have a fairly good range of road bikes.
I hired for quite a few years myself, the down side; time wise didn't always suit.
Now use folding bike (Raleigh Boardwalk) transported in case purchased from Argos. Advantage; anytime at all get up and go...

Good suggestion wrt hiring a box but will be making 2/3 long haul return flights per month. Cheaper to buy I reckon...

I've been looking at the Scicon boxes/bags, but yeah they are expensive enough that I'll wait till 'next xmas' or until I do some serious travelling with the bike.
May get the Btwin bag for when I need to throw the bike in the car though.

Hi Kiwi. I went for the VeloVault which was expensive but seems a solid box and not too heavy either. Get the bike in and a track pump and helmet. Comes in a couple of kilos below the limit for the scheduled airlines (not easy/Ryan) so room for a few more things you don't mind losing...
