long since realised that when changing tubes on the deck, then the likelihood is that, if dropped, the caps will bounce around until it finds the gap, and hence lost forever.

Caps on, reducing drag out weighs weight in this case, a open valve has nooks and crannies that wind gets taped in. A valve cap is nice and smooth.......
It's all personal preference at the end of the day, in not lazy, so o have them on. ;-)

I use Michelin UltraLight with smooth valves so not an issue for me. While I'm on the details, anyone sussed a decent way to clean rims other than with a good scrub with a washing up pad? Non acidic alloy wheel cleaner that I use on the car works fantastic with a foaming spray head and soft brush

I keep them on. Don't know why, just always have and probably always will. *Touch wood* haven't managed to misplace any yet either. Did have an issue a few weeks ago when unscrewing the cap actually unscrewed and removed the valve core, that was fun.....

No cap's for me. Probably because i'm lazy (about 4 seconds less when putting a little more wind in the tyres)

Off on the road bikes , on on the MTB, the IoW trails can mean the rims go underwater at this time of year, and I reckon it keeps the crap out.

I dont have any preference, I do agree with Rocket that they do not act as a seal (unlike Schrader)and it is best to keep bits of muck and grit out of the valve core. But as a FYI if you need to pump a tyre at a petrol station without an adapter. All you need to do is cut the cap in half (the top half) and refit the remaining part and the Pump will now work on the valve.
