So...
Before my current Triban 500SE my only other "grown up" bike is my MTB
Bought from new in 1989 and thus considered apparently as a bit of a classic/retro bike.
Chosen as it was within the price range and actually got featured in the top 10 bikes of 1989 within MBUK magazine.
Ive never ridden it hard, though have ridden it on and off for 25 years so it has done me proud.
All components are shimano (exage county) and nice even though were shimano entry-level at the time.
Weights 14kg, which is comparible to a fair few current day weights in MTBs of the lower price bracket (though only because it doesnt have the weight of suspension forks).
18 speed.
Non-suspended.
It is in very very good condition, though a bit muddy/dusty and greasy in some places.
This Xmas I plan to give it some TLC and get it as new to new condition as I can within reasonable effort.
My plan:
1: Damn good clean and degrease followed by relube (chain and front Deraileur already done due to a ride this year)
2: Hubs: Dismantle, clean and regrease (they run so smooth but never been done in 25yrs so I guess needs doing)
3: BB: Dismantle, clean and regrease (It runs so smooth but never been done in 25yrs so I guess needs doing)
4: New tyres, current are still original and at 25 years old are starting to show splitting lines on the sidewalls.
5: F Deraileur: Tighten up as its eased off some.
6: Bar tape to bar-end bullhorns, as the plastic coating has peeled.
7: Paintwork: Its black, so a little touchup (hardly any) with black smooth hammerite in places
8: Metalwork: Hardly any, but there are some rust spots, mainly on QR levers. Plan on a good brushing with autosol and then maybe a coat of clear nail varnish or gloss-enamel to seal.
Thats the bike and thats the plan.
Hopefully should end up with a nearly-new 25 year old retro bike MTB
Cost of this is: Β£25 tyres, Β£5 tape, Β£10 greases (hammerite borrow from Dad)
Total : Β£40
So thats my other bike
Cant decide if to clean first, so its easier to do the repairs... or if repairing will get it mucky so better to clean after all finished.
