Does anyone here have any experience with Merida?
I don't know much about them apart from the Lampre link.
I am currently looking at buying a new bike in New Zealand and for a strange reason they seem considerably cheaper in NZ than here in the UK, like about 35-40% cheaper.

They're based out of Taiwan - so maybe that's why? Import costs to NZ might be cheaper?

I can't think that's the case, otherwise all the brands would be like that.
I'm leaning towards 'website pricing error' as the reason.

Here in Italy the carbon models are quite popular, I think they have a good price/value ratio, but no direct experiences

I saw that as well. What is strange is that that model is a 2014 model, and yet the review was Oct 2014.

Merida own 49% of Spesh and make their frames - you get a better spec'd bike for less cash than the spesh imo

....you get a better spec'd bike for less cash than the spesh imo Pretty much ANY bike is better specced than a Specialized at the same price point!

So it appears its not a pricing error. The outlet is having a '1/2 price' sale. I can't see that anyone would ever buy the bikes when they were full price, at full price they are 50% higher than uk, at sale price 30-40% cheaper.
The good news is the sale lasts until after I get over there (and the prices are considerably lower than comparable bikes from other outlets), the bad news is I cannot decide between the different models. It would be an easy decision if I were paying for the bike myself (the alloy 105) but apparently the mother-in-law has said she will buy me one, or at least put some money towards it, so I've got the £1000 carbon models in my head and can't decide between the different options. I don't even know if I *need* carbon. Do I go for the ultegra model (shifters/derailliers only), the 105 model, or the disc tiagra model??
This morning I backflipped again and thinking just get the alloy 105, and then spend the extra cash on better wheels (the wheels on all of them are FR7s).

When faced with this sort of decision, isn't the advice normally to buy the best you can afford? I thought the 5000 comes with Alexrims Comp 24s ? (They would look nice on my T5 )

It is difficult to find any technical information about merida online. But I did see on a forum about the wheels being Fulcrums, maybe that was for 2014 model, and maybe as you say the new models are Alexrims. I'm going to have to just wait to make a decision until I get instore I guess. Main questions being the weight differences between the models, and about which geometry suits me better, the Ride or the Scultura. The other thing is I hate some of the colour schemes and like some others, but perhaps seeing them live will make a difference ETA: I love the colour scheme of the alloy 400 most, maybe that might be the main thing in the end. Also the missus/motherinlaw saying "you want to spend HOW MUCH!?!?"

Nice problem to have Make sure you budget for a solid bike box to bring it back (assuming you are)
