Had a new creaking noise creep in on the bike the last few weeks and has got worse - can't figure out what it is.
Checked all the bolts and everything is tightened.
Thought it was originally the bottle cage (its sounds like thats where it's coming from) and it creaking with the stress of the bottle in it moving around slightly when going over rougher road - but it happens without the bottle in there too.
Then tonight I noticed that the noise doesn't happen when I'm up out of the saddle (with more weight on the bars), which leads me to believe it's:
A.) something to do with the saddle or seat post B.) something to do with the head set or handlebars
But I can't see anything obvious from either area!
Anyone got any suggestions of what to try?

Have you changed your stem/spacers? I put a new stem on and carbon spacers and after a while they started to creak. All I did was take them off and apply some grease to the head tube and spacers and the creak was gone. Seems now I need to do it every 2-3 months to keep everything quiet.

Not recently - changed my stem a while ago, but perhaps a small bit of grease there wouldn't go a miss! Worth a shot, cheers.

i had a creak in my handlebar/stem clamp, very slight smearing of grease and wiped surplus off and all was good again.

With you mentioning your bottle cage, has your seat slipped down a little and the base of the stem maybe sitting on the cage mounting nubs that extend inside the frame where the seat tube goes? Probably not if your seat is up high, but would explain the connection youve made to your bottle cage. The mounting bolts stick into the frame so the seat stem cannot go past them but it can certainly sit on the top one and exert force onto it.
