I'm at my wits end trying to solve a problem I've been having with YouTube over the last few days, so handing it over to you guys, see if anyone knows what is going on.
Basically, some (maybe half) of the YouTube videos I try to watch won't load on any device on the home network. The only settings I've changed on the router lately are opening some ports for my Xbox One, but when disabling those the YT problem is still there. I've tried updating all the obvious things (all browsers, flash, java) and some not-so-obvious things (adobe reader - Googling suggested that could be an issue.) I've cleared all history, cookies, cache etc and disabled any add-ons I have on Firefox. I've turned the router off and on again. I've disabled hardware acceleration on Flash. I've tried the default YT player and the HTML5 player.
Pretty much the only obvious thing I haven't tried is a complete reset of the router (would rather avoid if I can) and/or re-installing Windows, which would be an extreme last resort, and given the fact that videos won't load on my phone probably wouldn't help anyway.
I've had this problem before (years ago) but don't remember what eventually solved the issue.
Any ideas?

The usual cure for this is what you've done, disable addons and cache clear. I ditched FF in favour of Chrome for this reason as FF with NoScript simply wouldn't play nicely with certain sites.

I do only use FF for YouTube and a second Facebook account, I really don't like it, but this problem is across all the main browsers. FF, IE, Chrome, Safari. And the fact that it is also stopping them playing on my phone (and probably Xbox although haven't tried) makes me think it must be something to do with the router. But the only things that aren't the default settings on there are the open ports for the Xbox One, and it still doesn't work if I disable those. Totally confusing

Can you try connecting to a different router to see if it makes a difference? Our neghbour and we can get on to each other's networks if there's an issue. Or can you use your phone as a hotspot?

Nope, neither of those. Don't have a spare router (last one died, hence the update to the Virgin Superhub) and don't have mobile data on any phone in the house. I'll probably bite the bullet and do a full reset of the router, it's just annoying to have to get it all set up again.

Ah ha. Changed my DNS settings to use OpenDNS. Loaded 4 YT videos that weren't working before. All now working Thanks a lot for that link.
