My Triban developed a lot of creaking and ticking noises on yesterday's rides so I've spent an hour in the garage to try to solve the mystery. First up remove and grease the pedals... no joy. Next up remove the cranks and grease up. I noticed one of the bolts was loose on the non drive crank arm. Probably the cause of the problem but I decided to go the whole hog and look at the bottom bracket cups. The drive side seemed fine and the non drive side just ever so slightly rough. I had a spare so changed it and stuck everything back together. The result... No creaking.... which was a result. While I was in there I changed a cleat on my regular "clip out" shoe. A nice luxury having a nice new cleat. The other one wasn't too bad so I left well be. Time to get out for some fresh air and exercise now. Still going great guns during the TDF.

Now in South Glos and North Wilts on a family visit for a week. It's going to be almost a month without a ride by the time I get back out again... On the plus side I am amazed at how many cyclists there are out on the roads these days - it's 'the new golf' according to a good non-cycling friend - I don't expect him to see the light any time soon - gym monkey!

Haven't been out for nearly a week due to knocking rattly headset. Hopefully resolved thanks to the usual good folks of this parish. Will try putting it all back together and see if I can catch up. As long as I can get my 21st ride done on stage 21 I shall count it as an achievement. Sounds like the bikes are suffering as well as the rest of us

The Triban did fine after it's visit to the maintenance depot. Smooth as silk out on the roads this afty until the rear tyre went down. I'd picked up a bit of glass. The tyre I have on is a Giant own brand that came with my other bike so I presume the puncture resistance isn't as good as my usual Conti's or Schwalbe's. www.strava.com/activities/168914893

My freehub is shot - awful vibrations through the cassette if free wheeling, OK on a short flat run but it makes longer rides a grating experience ... Mavic freehubs are not cheap (half the cost of a new wheel), most irritating. Are these the wheels you were working on about a month ago??

I've not touched them yet, trying to get through the TdF before putting new rim on but they're getting worse and I'm still waiting on spokes for rebuild - not sure if a missing spoke is the reason for the strange happenings or the free hub tbh. If this was Star Trek, Scottie would be saying 'she cannae take anymore captain'!

I know I'm probably being a "smart arse", but with the free hub, rim & spokes, a new wheel could have been an attractive option?

But that would mean that Rad misses out on using the amazing Dexion construction construction he has built to test and true his new rims!

If the free hub has gone, then that's annoying as hell - designed in obsolescence springs to mind ... but I may be being a little cynical here.
