Hello! Found the site via google while searching for info. Have been lurking reading many threads and looking at all the nice photos!
Wondered if you could help.....
I have a 14.5kg Enduro Mountain bike, which I've been riding on local cycle paths and canal paths. Most I can do is 40km before everything hurts! I want a bike that I can go out all day on, cycle paths / road / canal. Also be cheap enough so that I can lock it up without being worried (enduro bike is very expensive so it never leaves my sight!)
So I decided I needed some kind of hybrid bike, went to Decathlon and was looking at the original 5 with racks but they were 15-17kg and I don't think it's going to be a huge advantage over my enduro bike?
That's when I noticed the fit 5 which looked great, I then found this forum. Many people using drop bars. I have never ridden drop bars ever.
I will be on cycle paths / road / canal, would also like to do touring, and maybe fit a rack for these times. Maybe even a little city riding too. I won't be 'giving it my all' on the road, riding in groups, using clipless pedals etc.
I guess flat bars would be a better choice, but I don't want to make a mistake which will mean changing everything over later....
Lastly I'm 178cm 81.5 inside leg. 57 was my thoughts, but friend similar height is on a 54 fit 5.
Any help appreciated!

Hi,
You can probably expect a swathe of answers in favour of the Triban as we're all devoted. No knowledge of the Fit I'm afraid, but with regards to your planned riding, I would only consider the triban suitable for road and Tarmac cycle path use. Not sure the wheels would hold up to anything less smooth to be honest.
Good luck with your choice!

I take my T3 Red on canal paths and occasional fine gravel trails even on 23cc tyres (at some risk, Mavic Aksium wheels) - you could get some more durable 25cc rougher surface tyres and manage risk with it, as long as it's the sort of path you'd push a child's pushchair down fairly smoothly without having to lift it over obstacles and holes etc. but do it a lot and you will P******* though - if you find obstacles you don't want to be bumping over them like on a MTB. The Fit 5 and Triban 500 are not hugely different, if I was after fitness and sport for a long term / distance munching hack of a road bike, with occasional touring, I'd buy the T500; I would only put it into touring duties occasionally - if I was a riding mainly on hol's type of guy, or just out cruising about in the sunshine, then you can't go wrong with a Fit 5, it won't be as quick and committed as the purer sport bike but it will be easier on the body and able to cruise along faster than a MTB - I wouldn't buy one personally (just yet at my age) as I would choose either a MTB or Road bike out the stable, as a fairly black and white choice for my own ownership but it is exactly the sort of bike I'd like to cruise around if hiring something to site see with.

I bought a T5 last year and never got along with the drop bars, rather than selling it as I loved every other aspect of the bike I converted it to flat bars. Basically its now a souped up Fit 5 and I love it.
As Rad says its fine on surfaces up to fine gravel on 23 tyres and me and it are just as fast as I was when it had drop bars as I mainly rode on the hoods. Averaging 16-17 mph over my normal 12 mile evening loop
On saying all that I am not sure of the availability of the Fit 5 these days

The Fit 5 has become the Fit500 and there's a bargain special edition out at the moment using up the Tiagra stock for Β£500 www.decathlon.co.uk/btwin-fit-500-ltd-road-bike-id_8306462.htmlIgnore the picture (Fit5) it has Tiagra 10s double (compact) inc shifters You would need the larger size as flat bars give a shorter reach. As Rad says, not ideal on rougher paths, you can do it with care but you want wider tyres than you can fit for regular offroad use
