Can any locals recommend a cheap but comfortable hotel for a 1 night stop close to the Manchester Aquatics Centre?
Also, are there any areas near by that we should stay away from?

There's a few premier inn's nearby which will be as good as any. OK part of town right near the uni but a short walk down oxford road to the main buzz of the city. Loads of pubs/restaurants, particularly around Deansgate. Or Curry Mile in the other direction (which is awesome), but there's a few areas that way which I wouldn't take my kids at night.

Thanks joneve . Don't want the buzz of the city. Son swimming in the evening, then needing a big meal and a good kip before (hopefully) swimming in a final in the morning. He's 6ft 3in so should put off the casual thug! Ideally we'd want a hotel that he can walk to the Aquatic Centre from. One Premier Inn we've looked at is £99!

That's cheap for city centre!
Have you thought about a hostel? A lot of the more modern ones have private rooms (rather than larger dorms), and are generally in decent locations.

Searched on Google and it says Denton isn't a nice place (To put it mildly). Searched on Trip Advisor and it gets good reviews.

Not heard of that before - Thanks Think we are going for the Premier Inn at Denton. Makes it all easy. In the pool for a 56 second swim in the evening. Then drive to the salubrious £29 for the night accommodation, off to the restaurant next door for a meal and then early to bed. Big free breakfast followed by a 55 sec swim in the morning to win the final. Then drive home and get selected for the Youth Olympics in China later in the year.....In an ideal world!
