My wife has decided to do a triathlon and wants a T3 but the only red ones left are 51cm or lower. This maybe ok size wise as she is only 5'4" but it comes with 650 wheels. Does anyone know how much difference that will make, how much of a disadvantage are they against 700s? I just think, smaller wheels make slower, harder work. (I used to cycle to school on a Raleigh RSW16 which put me off cycling for 30 years!) We are going up to Decca Reading on Saturday for a try out on the 51 Reds against the 54 Whites but wanted to be armed with some knowledge. Thanks

Not a huge difference and most people seem to be very complimentary that Decathlon fit appropriate sized wheels in relation to the frame. Most manufacturers do a tyre in this size (inc conti gp4000s), so you are OK there. Grab some tubes when you are at Decathlon as their 650c seem to be good value. I think from reading on the forum, replacement wheels for 650c may be a little rarer, but not impossible if you want to upgrade.
Some issues with finding mudguards for the 650c, but I seem to remember a link showing you how to adapt SKS perfectly somewhere on the site, so this is not the end of the world either.
Hope this is helpful.

As far as the slower, harder work part, it doesn't make a difference really. Smaller wheels does mean slightly more work over the same distance vs 700 wheels, but they are lighter than 700 wheels. They pretty much cancel each other out. Tyres and inner tubes aren't a problem either. Not a huge range a tyres out there but there are some good ones available. Replacement/upgraded wheels seem to be harder to find, I haven't spent a huge amount of time looking for any but have only found one set on Wiggle. No idea if they are any good or not. That should be your main focus really. If you think you'll want to upgrade the wheels and the 54 White is a better/good fit then possibly go for that. If wheel upgrades aren't likely in the future then just go for whichever bike feels the best and don't let the wheel size sway your decision.

Again, hats off to Decathlon for thinking about fit rather than sticking 700c on everything.

Thanks to your kind advice and the excellent friendly and knowledgeable Will at Decca Reading, we are now a two Triban 3 house. Picked up a few bits for the kids whilst we were there, how did I spend so much money there and came home with nothing for me?!!

She has a nice red 51 sitting in the garage next to my red 60, it looks like Triban & Son.
It was a no brainer once I saw her sitting on the 51 & the 54, the 51 was a far better fit and the smaller wheels make it all look in proportion.

Glad you are both happy with it. My misses also has the red 51cm T3 with the diddy wheels and is equally delighted with it.
