As a wearer of varifocal glasses, I am acutely aware that I am failing to observe Rule 39. I would really like to wear some cool cycling glasses especially in the unlikely event of the sun showing itself. I am not sure if its possible to get prescription lenses with cycling specs but I am sure they would be very expensive. Has anyone else got this problem? Any suggestions?

I used to wear contact lenses when riding. but then had loads of eye infections so just wear prescription sun glasses now. only down side is I now have to carry two sets of glasses. Not as cool as cycling glasses but cheaper. I did ask Specsavers about prescription cycling glasses, they can do them but very expensive..The other option is inserts for cycle glasses. seen these on the web but I did not like them. Keep me posted if you find a better solution.

This is a topic I have been researching for the past couple of weeks, was actually going to pop into Spec Savers in the morning to enquire. I am also a spectacle wearer, I currently have reactions lenses which are ok for normal use but for cycling I am looking over the top of the frames into the sunlight (if we have any). After a quick google I came across a site for presciption sports glasses RockSpex. There seems to be a good range of cycling glasses varying in price range. I put in a mock order as an example for some Tifosi Roubaix sunglasses priced at £59.50. These come in red or black frame and have 3 tint's included, grey, red and clear and also the option to have presciption inserts. As I didn't have my prescription to hand I just filled it out with any random prescription. The total price for glasses, prescription inserts and recorded delivery comes to £131.48. Obviously if you feel like Oakley Jawbones then the price is likely to be in excess of £400. I'm not familiar with RockSpex, I haven't done any real enquiring about them apart from a quick look at their site. They do have a contact number, a postal address, although it seems to be a residential address. They also have Facebook and Twitter pages. Payment options include credit card and Paypal. I'm going to pop into Spec Savers and see what options they have and prices and whilst there grab a copy of my presciption. Neil

I wear a pair of Bloc sunglasses which i originally bought for skiing. If it isn't sunny I wear some Bolle clear lens glasses which are actually classed as safety glasses.

Thanks for the reply Bobcollege. The RockSpex site spoils us for choice as there are so many listed. Let us know how you get on after your visit to Spec Savers. I have a pair of glasses with my distance prescription and with tinted lenses. They are fine for driving in bright light but they have normal frames and don't give the all round protection of cycling specs. They are useless for close up work like reading a map or sat nav but above all they look naff. Varifocal lenses are expensive (more than the cost of my T3) so I wouldn't go down that route but if I can get some cycling specs with a distance prescription that might be the answer.

I wear varifocals too. Spec Savers client. I would like to hear how much they charge too. I see ok with out them when riding but would like to extend my vision to the full range as when I am wearing glasses. I would be interested if Spec Savers would do that stuff that stops the glasses fogging up.

Unfortunately due to a family bereavement I haven't been able to find the time to look into this any further. Hope to start looking again and making enquiries next week.

I'm a varifocal wearer and have prescription sunglasses. I was having trouble with 'the gap' round the edges. We were off to Nepal (above snow line/ very bright etc). Specsavers couldn't do 'wrap arounds' but my local optician did 'nearly wrap arounds' . They're Rodenstock Wimbledon range (and apparently would help me play tennis better too!). They just about 'close the gap', are not true wrap arounds, and since they're a very complex prescription cost about a bike and a half. But I wear them all the time, they keep the draft out when I'm on the bike (although that might reflect on my lack of speed).

That's what I was afraid of OT. The bike and a half cost. My ordinary specs cost around two T3s a couple of years ago.

Some good tips on prescription eyewear in this Bike Radar thread, certainly some more affordable options.

Some good tips on prescription eyewear in this Bike Radar thread, certainly some more affordable options. I had a look at 2 of the links for prescription glasses, the one site (Power Race) you have to provide your own rx inserts so thats going to be at an extra cost. The other link (Kontrol Sports)the price is cheap if you have clear lenses, as soon as you add tints, thinner lenses or reaction lenses the price soon rockets to over £100+. I dad a quick reply from RockSpex after making an enquiry yesterday. Basically I asked if I had previously bought some glasses is it possible to get new replacement inserts as and when I get a new prescription and also what the turn-a-round time was from ordering to delivery. New inserts can be purchased as and when you get a new prescription and the turn-a-round time from ordering to delivery should be within 10 days. Now who do I decide to order from lol

I'm short sighted, wearing glasses, but i wear contact lenses and a set of Endura glasses when im on the bike. I love the irony of wearing contact lenses just so i can wear glasses

I finally took the plunge and ordered some prescription sunglasses from Rockspex. The glasses I ordered were the silver CR Sport glasses by Dixon which are priced at £69.90 for the basic sunglasses. Add on the prescription inserts at £59.90 for standard lenses, another £29.00 for grey, clear and blue revo interchangeable tints and £2.98 for first class recorded delivery brings the total cost £161.78. I used a 10% off voucher to knock the price down to £145.90
I will keep people posted and let you know how I get along with them.
